We discussed about it in last blug meet and we have come out with some ideas

see http://bangalore.gnu.org.in/?SFD

That would be great if someone give a talk on SFD. One Easy way of doing it
sending SMS to Radio City on SFD (I was thinking about it today). If they
get a lot of SMSes they will definitely have to talk about it and it is very
easy for each of us but make sure every one sends SMS on SFD Day.

Cheers

Hai Vimal,
Iam Anil Kumar, teacher, Govt Town H.S.S., Kannur. We have three systems with 2.4GHz Celeron, Intel 845
Chipset Gigabyte M/B & 128Mb RAM. The monitors are 14" colour five or six year old ones. When IT <at> school
linux starts from HDD or live CD the display goes blank. I checked the problem with a new 15" colour monitor
and found the problem is with the refresh rate of the monitors. The refresh rates available with the above
said linux does not support with our monitors. They support 60Hz. Hope you will help me to solve this
problem. I come to know that many schools are facing this problem. But they misunderstood the problem is
with RAM or M/B.

Hello Anil,

X-window does support that refresh rate. It is just a configuration problem.
You may contact Mr. Shamsheer who is stationed at Kannur to solve this
problem. His phone number is 0497-2731487.

Inform him that I ( Anil, OSSICS, Kochi ) has referred him.

Regards,

Anil

IMHO, it is not very nice to associate Free Software with the
Left.

Hi all,
Is there any specialised tools in GNU/Linux for use of
Journalists(Newspaper)? I think scribus is one of them.If there are
any more tools please provide info about it. GUI based tools are
prefered. also let me know that whether they are used in the industry.

regards
Manilal

It's not inherently GUI based, but LaTeX [http://www.latex-project.org/]
should cover all publication requirements. There are also programs like
LyX [http://www.lyx.org/] and TeXmacs [http://www.texmacs.org/] which
act as front ends and have a GUI.

LaTeX is not really suited for newspaper typesetting. As the project
page says: LaTeX is a high-quality typesetting system, with features
designed for the production of technical and scientific documentation.

If the newspaper publishing industry is intended, then they could use
many tools, inlcuding photo-editing (Gimp), vector graphics (Inkscape),
typesetting (Scribus), email and so on. Journalists themselves would
need tools like wordprocessors, spreadsheets, email, contact management
and task scheduling (evolution, kontact), etc. Simple things like
stickynotes/knotes could be very useful as reminders. Of course, photo
journalists could use Gimp, and cartoonists may be able to use ktoon or
inkscape.

Best
