The 10th Libre Software Meeting (a free software annual event held in
France since 2000) will take place in Nantes from 7th to 11th July
2009.

Is there a molecular biology suite project?

Hello
I am a post doc at the Dundee University, in Scottland, UK. I mainly do genetics and I need to be able to see, edit and align .abi files which are DNA sequence chromatogram files. In our lab, we used to use vector NTI from invitrogen (http://www.invitrogen.com/site/us/en/home/LINNEA-Online-Guides/LINNEA-Communities/Vector-NTI-Community/Vector-NTI.html) which was free for academy up to the last release... I never liked this software but it was the one used in the lab, so... I usually use the APE software (http://www.biology.utah.edu/jorgensen/wayned/ape/) but it can't align multiple DNA sequence chromatograms, neither edit them... I was wondering if there was a project that you know of aiming at developping this kind of software or even a more complete one, since I think that there is no really user friendly, complete and free (as in freedom) such software. I have been talking with my boss and some collegues, and there should be a possibility to look and hoppefully get some funding for such project that could involve many different labs (as far I know, most of the labs doing a bit of molecular biology would be interested, and that means a lot of labs)!

prog' de la session "sci" pour RMLL 06

Bonjour,

le programme final de la session "Logiciels Libres pour la recherche
Scientifique", aussi complet et definitif que possible,
est desormais pose dans sa version finale (actualisee ce matin)
sur le Spip http://www.rmll.info/theme_26

Sauf erreur, il est derive du Wiki

qui contient des liens vers les logiciels

Le changement le plus important est le deplacement
de la table ronde du samedi en debut d'apres-midi au samedi 11h30.

De mon point de vue, ce programme est particulierement
interessant pour des personnes manipulant des donnees
(1D, 2D, 3D, ...) et souhaitant faire un passage vers
des solutions libres, en langage interprete, avec des
possibilites de calcul interactif et d'affichage "en ligne" 

Un grand merci de diffuser dans vos reseaux.

Octave est pour les fonctions mathématiques compatibles presque 100 %
avec matlab (est-ce aussi vore expérience) ? Pour le reste ce n'est
pas encore aussi bien.

Pour les interfaces graphiques ... c'est justement un problème, et
sans doute le plus important.

oui. Je l'ai fait aussi. Comment a ton avis pourrait-il être possible
d'encourager l'usage d'octave par rapport à cette question ?

J'ai vu qu'il existe octaviz mais n'ai pas encore vu comment
l'utiliser, et je me demande comment faire avec octave. Et sinon avec
scilab.

je ne tiens pas ce genre de discours et j'enseignerai dès septembre
avec matlab (ou octave) les exercices d'un cours de calcul numérique.
Pour ceci, cela devrait aller ... si je trouve une solution pour les
interfaces utilisateurs simplifiées.
