No vote yet on 802.11n

It looks like the engineers can not come to any agreement again on 802.11n.  I still strongly urge you not to be buy any 802.11n technology yet.

802.11n specification vote delayed yet again

2006/08/16

With dozens of manufacturers and chipset vendors waiting on the final 802.11n WiFi specification, the actual ratified spec has been delayed again. Apparently, there is so much hubbub in the spec that little nooks and crannies about its operations is quite displeasing to the IEEE members who vote to ratify each WiFi spec that comes along. *sigh*.

Although wireless router manufacturers and equipment vendors are already making 802.11n equipment -- with future firmware upgrades promised once the spec is delivered -- we'll have to wait until January to get the spec, since that is the push-back date as of today. Yikes!

Schumer Pushes $50m for Rural Wi-Fi

There might be hope for those of us in rural areas for reasonable broadband access.

Wi-Fi Networking News reports nearly daily on all the news associated with wireless networking.

Schumer Pushes $50m for Rural Wi-Fi

By Glennf on Rural

Wireless Week reports on Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) proposal: The Senator would like to get $50m added to an existing Department of Agriculture rural broadband program to provide funds or tax breaks to get more Wi-Fi built out in smaller towns and rural areas. Wireless Week wonders if this would affect EarthLink or other metro-scale network contractors, but notes that the funds would go to towns almost certainly below these companies' scale of operations.

In a recent podcast with Don Berryman, EarthLink's head of municipal networking, he said that the company has to work by the number of houses passed as a metric for whether to bid on contracts. That metric led them to give a pass on the SmartValley wireless project in Silicon Valley.

Wi-Fi Group To Certify Draft 802.11n Products

This was just reported by Ziff Davis.  Proceed at your own risk in using 802.11n products. Wi-Fi Group To Certify Draft 802.11n Products The Wi-Fi Alliance originally planned to hold off certification of 802.11n products until the IEEE finished ratifying their standards for the wireless technology. But they can wait no longer.

The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) is taking longer than planned to produce Draft 2.0, the fully ratified standard covering 802.11n, the successor to today's Wi-Fi products. The Wi-Fi Alliance said on Tuesday that it will move forward and offer a preliminary certification for 802.11n products based on interoperability of the products that are currently on the market.

Re: libwireless digest: August 30, 2006

Are there any library systems at the city or county level, who are
presently the hub, or base for municipal or county WiFi? It just
seems to make sense for the libraries to be primary in the WiFi
rollouts.
