If the xstartup file was created first, upgrading VNC doesn't change it.

That is what Tim Waugh provided.

Look at the new RealVNC beta.

Your parents DSL modem may be acting as a router/firewall as well.
That's the only way they are using the 192.168 IP address and
connecting to the Internet.

You should check and see if there is port specific routing that the
DSL modem can do. i.e. Any access to the public IP on port 5900 is
routed to an inside host on the same port.

Finally, don't forget that VNC is not secure, only the initial login
is encrypted.

Using KDE on RH 8 - Terminal has extra characters added???

I was able to get a linux 3.3.7 vncserver to start and show a KDE session via a remote connection. I reset the
xstartup file with a single startkde & command? How do I get the shells to operate without adding extra
characters in the command line? Is there a Xterm command or other commands to add in the xstartup file to
give terminal sessions via KDE? Any help appreciated. Thanks Kris

Problems with VNC server

Ok.. This one has me stuffed, tried a few things and no luck.

If I run the VNC Server program it runs fine however if I start it as a
service it runs and windows says it's running but when I try to login with a
viewer from another computer it prompts for the password, which I enter, and
nothing happens. I've rebooted and entered manual registry settings, with no
luck. If I then go back to the server, shut down the service and load the
standard server it works fine. I really need to get it running as a service,
any ideas?

Stuart

Windows 98 PC hangs on FTP whilst using VNC

**** Your attention is drawn to the legal disclaimer at the foot of this
message ****

I have a problem with either VNC or Windows!

I am using VNC viewer from my PC to look at other PCs at various
locations (LAN and WAN). I have one batch of PCs running Windows 98SE
that each hour send a number of files to one of our servers using MS DOS
FTP routines. The problem is that if I am logged on to one of these PCs
with VNC when the DOS routine starts or if I log on whilst it is
running, the remote PC hangs and requires rebooting.

Does anyone know of a workaround/fix/solution or have any tips?

Any help will be greatly appreciated

WINVNC not working for normal user

Dear all,

Am trying to get WINVNC to work on a windows 2000 server platform, and
going through the list I could find people with problems in a similar
direction, but not exactly the same, in any case sorry if I dual post, I
could not find a solution to the problem yet.

If on the machine itself, the administrator logs on, and runs the winVNC,
then everything works fine. However as soon as a user logs on either
locally or even remotely (using the terminal service client software) then
if you log on with the VNC client, you get a black screen as a background,
and a small square which seems to be acting as mouse pointer. Sometimes I
do get the actual desktop background (there is no particular reason which
makes this to work or not) but then I cannot do anything, the mouse pointer
stays the small square and no matter where I click on nothing happens.

Any suggestions on what is going wrong here ?
The users normally have all access, except for full control on all the
files within the realvnc directory and subdirectories/files.

Many thanks,

Wim

VNC disconnects behind Linksys

I've found various people having this problem, but no fix as of yet...

I have a bunch of servers behind a Linksys router (BEFSR41) that I have the
proper ports open for VNC use and can connect via my outside machines.
However, I get disconnected rapidly, with the connection just dropping for
no apparent reason. I have tried both 3.3.7 and the new beta, both exhibit
the same behavior. I have installed RADMIN, a similar product to VNC, and
it works much better, with an occasional disconnect, but not often, whereas
VNC disconnects happen all the time.

Does the Java viewer work better in this type of environment perhaps?

Re: VNC disconnects behind Linksys

I have ALOT of Win32 & Linux systems behind a Linksys Router-firewall & a
Linksys wireless access Point as well.
I vnc to Austrailia, Scotland, South Texas and other points on the Gulf
Coast from a Win98 box ruuning an old AT&T vnc viewer Ver 3.3.3R3.
.
It (firewall) does not have the best passthrough rate as more expensive stuff,
but the connects rarely go down if ever.

My Router/Firewall is a Linksys Model BEF-SR81 Firmware v1.07 April 16, 2003
