What is the name of the lockfile?

Have you checked on both machines?

Can you find it with "locate"?

suggestion for improving error report from unison

hi,

First, thanks for unison; I often use it to sync my machines.

I just came across a little problem that took me a while to resolve.
I'm just wondering if the error message could be improved.

Here is the error I got:

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Received unexpected header from the server:
 expected "U" but received "A".
This is probably because you have different versions of Unison
installed on the client and server machines.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

This baffled me for a while; I checked and both machines are running
same version of unix on linux. After about 10 mins of debugging and
looking, I found that the problem was that in one of my machines I had
the following line in .bashrc:

eval `ssh-agent`

which would cause "Agent PID xxxx" to be printed when new logins were
made. Presumably the "A" from "Agent" is what unison received, when
it was expecting U? Is there any chance that the error could print a
bit more about what it received? If I had seen this message about
Agent PID I'd have probably homed in on the problem much quicker!

Thanks, Stephen

It is listed on my site since 2 years:

Unison and non-English characters

Unison is _exactly_ what I was looking for to keep a mirror of my
files on a linux server, except that it mutilates filesnames with
foreign characters in them. Letters with umlauts, acutes, graves, all
end up as gibberish. Searching through the posts here, I'd surmise
that the problem is that Unison only utilizes 8 bit ascii and linux
uses full unicode, or some such.

I tired both running the Unison daemon and connecting via ssh as well
as mounting the linux partition as a windows network volume using
samba (which was also unacceptably slow.) In both cases, non-English
characters were garbled.

Is there any way to avoid this problem, or would someone recommend an
alternative piece of software? (Free, preferably OSS.)

It seems to me that this error message regularly confuses people.
Would it be possible for the developers to report the entire received
line, rather than just the first letter? This would I think make it
much clearer what's going on. The response is usually an error
message or diagnostic of some kind, but you have to be pretty
experienced to recognise it from the first character.

Not sure how easy this would be without looking at the code...

This error is fixed in recent versions of Unison.

See the output attached below. This file definitely does NOT exist at
startup of unison!

>

Sure. There have been such lockfiles on both sides and I've cancelled
them all by hand, but none had that name!

> Can you find it with "locate"?
No!

So, what I did, I captured the output of the text-UI unison lauched
with ktrace. You can find the relevant parts of the output of kdump
below. It seems to me that unison tries to hard link the same file
twice, isn't it?

Does someone understand what's going on, PLEASE. I definitively have
to synchronize after working on both sides, and I wouldn't like to
clean all archives and startup from scratch in this moment!

Thanks,

Thomas

It seems that the two roots are the same. What does your preference
file look like?

It has two empty root declarations. It's the default preference file,
isn't it and should ask me to tell what I want to sync, shouldn't it?
