Unexpected errors while synchronizing with CD-RW (UDF file system)

In my attempt to go open source, I am currently evaluating unison for
synchronizing my data. I want to synchronise my computer at work with
an UDF formatted CD-rom (previously using CD Direct, now HP DLA), and
syncronise it back home whenever I need to work there. For particular
files, however, unison fails to propagate the changes, sometimes even
in a dangerous way. In my current set, there are again a couple of
files (three out of 310 files) for which unison is behaving
unexpectedly. Following are the messages:

Help on Unison starting procedure at boot time ?

Remote host changes name

Hi,

I reach a remote host with login.host.sth. This host address is then 
(somehow) redirected to a host like host06.host.sth. Because the name 
changes nearly everytime I connect, unison is creating a new archive 
file everytime. Is there something similar to setting 
UNISONLOCALHOSTNAME for the remote host name?

Fwd: unison OS X

I use the following settings on my local Mac machine to use the very  
nice Developer Tools graphical 'merge' program to resolve conflicts:

merge =

One direction synchronization

Greetings,
I downloaded the windows binary for unison.  I place it on
my NT 4 Server.  My NT 4 Server (Powercat) maps a share from
another NT Server (backup).  I wish to use unison to copy data
from the NT 4 Server (Powercat)  to the backup server.  I want
it to only copy when the data on Powercat has changed.  I do
not want files coming back from backup.

I was looking for some info on how to do this.  Is it possible with
unison ?  

thanks for the any info.  A RTFM is fine as long as you point me
to the location of the FM.

Problem with path longer than 256 chars

Hi,
I'm using unison to remotely synchronize a Windows XP to a Windows NT
with a classic cygwin/ssh set-up.
Everything was working perfectly until unison stopped working after
the creation of a new set of directories on one of the host.
The problem seems to happen at the beginning of the file copying when
unison try to create temporary directories on the destination host, i
found in the log a lot of lines concerning several directories like
this one :

Failed with exception Util.Transient("Error in creating directory:\nNo
such file or directory [mkdir(C:/Documents and Settings/ansofy/Mes
Documents/traduction/Nancy matis/Kodak/Ref Mat/Hi Marcom
28-11-2003/78138 - MARCOM - EPMAR - Di.0 sell sheet feature package

So my guess is that the problem comes from the size of the argument
given to mkdir that exceeds 256 chars, all the other paths found
in the log are also over 256 chars.
Am i correct in assuming that the trouble is the length of the path ?
Has anyone had this problem before ?
And (most importantly) does anyone know how to solve this ? :)

Unison itself doesn't use any fixed-length string buffers for anything, so
this looks likely to be coming from Windows (or perhaps the posix
compatibility library for windows) -- might be hard to fix .

It's a native windows limit.

feature request: -ultrafastcheck for USB drive users

I have been using Unison 2.9.1 on Win98 to syncronize a portable USB 
drive with the backup I keep on my main hard drive.  Once I got 
through the first update to create the achives and started using the -
fastcheck option, I get very good results on quick updates, but 
because USB (1.1) is so slow, the double-checking that Unison does on 
all updates (even with -fastcheck) means it takes quite a while 
whenever there are significant changes.

Unison seems to compare full contents of updated files, and also for 
some reason read the entire contents of files that are new to one 
filesystem or deleted from the other.  For my purposes this is 
completely unnecessary, as I can get by just fine with date/time 
checking ONLY when backed up by my confirmation of the changes.

The feature I would like to request is some kind of "-ultrafastcheck" 
option that skips ALL reading of file contents, even the update 
double-checks.  I'm sure this would cause a significant speed-up for 
those of us where the slowest link is the one from processor to drive 
and cannot be avoided.
