Still somebody using ubh?

Hi all,

i'm quite new to the list and UBH.
First i wanted to write my own software to download binary content
from usenet using Perl an MySQL.
I wrote some lines of code for my tool called "BULL-SHIIT" (Binary
Usenet Loader and Lister - Software Helps Identifing Interesting
Threads).
But after googeling around a little bit, i find UBH. And at this
point i decided to use it.
The bad thing about UBH is, that it seems, that not many people seems
to use it and that developement seems to stop.
I have some ideas for further improvements (a kind of webbased GUI
and stuff like that).
But the question is: Is somebody else than me still using UBH?
According to the posts in this list, UBH seems to be not to be a
heavy used tool.

Regards

jrimuc

Fixed problem with long subjects causing db errors in metainfo

After over a year and a half with my new computer I finally
got around to installing WinCvs so that I can commit fixes
to CVS on SourceForge.

The only pending change I have regards a small bug with
the way long (more than 128 char) subjects are logged in
the metainfo table.

ubh stores and assembles article subjects as CHAR(255). Always
did, always will.

However, after all is said and done, when it comes time to
log the metadata in the metainfo table, the subject column
is VARCHAR(128).

Every once in awhile you may run across an article with a
subject longer than 128 characters. This will (would) cause
a database insertion error when ubh tried to log this subject
in the metainfo table.

I have committed a fix for this to the file
/stable3/lib/Ubh/Metadata.pm

You can preview this change:

http://ubh.cvs.sourceforge.net/ubh/stable3/lib/Ubh/Metadata.pm?r1=1.2&r2=1.3

The behavior is that ubh will truncate subjects longer than 128 chars
when logging them in the metainfo table. Processing of long subjects
(up to 255 chars) has always been supported and will not be affected.
This change only affects the logging of long subjects in the metainfo
table.

Re: So, are people still using ubh?

There was quite a bit of extra logic added to ubh3 by
a volunteer developer that severely hampers the
performance of inserts (way too many indexes being
computed).  Thus I am reluctant to accept
anyone else's work.  If you think you can improve the
speed of ubh by **removing** code (and indexes),
by all means, show me what you have.

I've changed either hard drives or computers 3x in
the past year and haven't revived my CVS setup.
I have a few commits to make (eg, handling subject
headers greater than 256 chars), but nothing major.
The last time I tried to do a commit SourceForge's
CVS server was offline (for several days, if I recall).

MySQL has been working very well for the past many
years.  What would be the compelling reason(s) for
moving to a different database engine?

As far as disk space checking is concerned, multi-terabyte
RAIDs are very affordable, why bother?  Unless you are
downloading questionable material into a size-limited
encrypted filesystem.  It seems that everyone who has
ever desired disk space checking has been in that boat.

Subject: [ubh] So, are people still using ubh?

I've been using ubh2 for many years now, and have hacked it up to work
pretty much exactly like I want it.

However, RR recently outsourced their news server to newshosting. com.
Now, this is a good thing, but it created some problems -- most
notably, going from 1.5 days retention to 30 days retention has caused
the headers to increase greatly in size. Now ubh2 averages spending
around two hours merely filtering the headers from some of the larger
groups (the -I/-X options.)

So I'm investigating ubh3. So far, I'm pretty impressed with how it
works, but I see a lot of room for improvement. ubhdb started out
really fast, but it's really slowed down later in the run, probably
because my headers and xref_headers tables have over 8 million rows
now. (But that's what happens when you insert into a large table with
indexes ...)

Is ubh3 still being maintained? Looking at the CVS, it looks like
nothing has been changed in two years. And a few years ago (Feb 23,
2004) Gerald said he's not adding any new features, and not interested
in patches. Has any of this changed since?

I see a few minor changes I'll want to make to ubh3 if I'm going to
switch to it, and wonder if there's any point in submitting patches.
If Gerald is not interested, are others?

(For starters, I'd probably add a quickstart guide, move database
coordinates to a config file, add disk space checking, make -I/-X
searches case insensitive by default, perhaps make it work for
databases other than mysql (though mysql is probably the ideal match
for ubh.)

Have people replaced ubh with anything else? (Am I beating a dead
horse here?)
