New 2.0Beta Version

Hi All,

I've been using TightVNC 1.3dev5 for years now to connect with a few
friend's and their parent's computers to solve problems as they arose. I
did this by writing a batch file that did the following:
[path_to_winvnc]\winvnc -kill -run
[path_to_winvnc]\winvnc -connect [my_static_ip_address::port_number]

I created a shortcut to the batch file on their desktop; and voila, they
could reverse connect to me anytime I was running VNC Viewer. Well a
couple of people have gone to Windows Vista and 7, so now I have the
issues mentioned on the site.

My question is this: Will there be anyway to launch tvnserver.exe and
automatically connect to a listening viewer in the final release? If
not, is there some other way to accomplish a similar operation with the
new 2.0 version?

Thanks in advance for any help,
Michael

Here is a quote from the upcoming TightVNC 2.0 Beta 2 announcement:

=== cut ===
Several useful command-line options have been re-implemented:
-connect, -disconnectall, -reload and -shutdown (they must be preceded
with either -controlservice or -controlapp in the command line).
Similar options (with slightly different names) were supported by
TightVNC 1.x, but there were no counterparts available in TightVNC 2.0
Beta 1. You requested them, and here they are.

New version 2 beta 2

Congrats on the new version.

Upgrade worked well and assumed all previous configurations.

Also works much faster (i think as fast as previous stable release).

Best regards

TightVNC 2.0 Beta 2

Hi,
first of all I'd like to say, that the new TightVNC release is really great!
It is almost exactly what I was looking for as a replacement for the current remote desktop application we're using.

But I do have a few questions (hope they haven't been discussed here too often ;-)):

1. Is there a possibility to change the default port the viewer is using to connect to hosts, so that you don't have to enter it manually for every connection?

2. Is it possible to enable and disable local user input during an active session?
I just found the option to globally set these settings for the whole session but I didn't find any option to change it on demand.

3. Can the viewer be configured to not close down when the session is closed?

Thanks in advance.

Status: Security type requested

I am trying to connect over the internet to the console on an Apple Mac
running Apple Remote Desktop on OSX. I have the TightVNC viewer installed
on Windows Vista but the connection always gets stuck in a "Connecting"
state with "Status: Security type requested". Both "tight" and "raw"
encoding fail in the same way. I have never attempted this before, and am a
newbie to both TightVNC and Apple Remote Desktop. Is there any
self-diagnosis I can do, and does anyone have tips on what Status: Security
type requested" actually means? Thanks in anticipation.

Unlike TightVNC 1.3, TightVNC Server 2.0 (when run as a service) should
use the same configuration -- it does not care if some users are logged in.

No, that's incorrect. Query timeout should not be 0 and actually the
configuration window should not allow you to enter 0 there. If you don't
want to query the local user, just do not use this action in the access
control rules.

Check if that computer is accessible (e.g. use ping) and all firewalls
and/or routers between the machines are configured properly.

First of all, make sure that Xvnc is actually running, e.g. using ps
command or connecting to it from localhost. Then, check the firewall
setting (ipchains/iptables/whatever) on the Linux computer.

Unfortunately, no. You can change the default port only by modifying and
rebuilding the sources.

I'm not sure I understand the requirements correctly. How would you
change that "on demand"? Why just changing the configuration is not an
option?

> 3. Can the viewer be configured to not close down when the session is
> closed?

Current TightVNC Viewer for Windows does not support that. The Java
Viewer can offer more options to control the behavior on disconnect:

--> "Offer relogin" (no GUI equivalent, applicable only in the applet
    mode)

    Values: "Yes", "No".
    Default: "Yes".

If set to "No", the buttons "Login again" and "Close window" won't
be shown on disconnects or after an error has occured.

--> "Show offline desktop" (no GUI equivalent)

    Values: "Yes", "No".
    Default: "No".

If set to "Yes", the viewer would continue to display desktop even
if the remote side has closed the connection. In this case, if the
button panel is enabled, then the "Disconnect" button would be
changed to "Hide desktop" after the connection is lost.
