Re: Static jpeg and zlib libraries

Hi Constantin,

Thank you for the response.

I actually ended up editing 2 files.

vncviewer/Imakefile - modified ZLIB_LIB and JPEG_LIB to point to the static libraries.

Xvnc/config/cf/vnclibs.def - modified VNCSYSLIBS to point directly to the static libraries.  And set ZLIB to blank, otherwise it would pick up the dynamic version of libz.

That seemed to solve my problem.

Thanks again,
Maryann

We are having problems with the jpeg and zlib dependencies and would like to include them statically in our tight vncviewer and Xvnc builds for version 1.3.9. I read in previous posts, (~4/4/08) that these libraries are built statically by default.
I guess those posts mentioned another branch of development (1.5 development versions). Xvnc and vncviewer of 1.3 versions link with zlib and libjpeg dynamically by default. I'm not sure if there is a simple way to change that. Perhaps it might be a good idea to build them as usual but edit the link command manually.

some keys not working

Hello,

I have recently started using tightvnc.
I also use xterm.
But when I am using vnc and xterm remotely the Alt+1 or Alt+2 or Alt+whatever_number
doesn't seem to work in irssi for example.
Also,if I do Alt+Tab how do I let tightvnc know that I want that to be captured in the vnc and not
in my host operating system(which btw happens to be windows).

Thank you

RE: copy&paste host OS to vnc

Depends what version you are using...
VNCe, it works fine, but that's not freeware.
TNVC, text only.

if you want to move files.....
What I do is if its a Windows box, put freesshd on it, enable sftp and use your ssh client to open a tunnel to your TVNC port. Then you get secure TVNC AND sftp funcitonality.

Cheers,
John

Windows button bug

Holding down the windows button and pressing 'e', for example, should launch a
copy of explorer. There are a lot of other functions available, but Tight VNC
doesn't make it happen. Not a major or critical issue, just something to fix in
your copious free time, CK.

Newbie Struggling with VNC options and very slow (remote) connection

Hey, guys...  I've spent hours now in IRC channels and with Google trying to find a solutions to this!  If you guys can't help me, I'm officially giving up!

;-)

The scenario:

I am "tech support" for a family member and a friend--each of whom are running Mac OS X Leopard.  I have the OSXvnc server running successfully on both machines. They both have a slow broadband connection.

On my end, I'm generally running three flavors of Linux (Ubuntu, Sidux, openSUSE), and Windows XP.

(Now, bear with me here a sec)  Under Sidux I was using the following command to invoke a low-rez session (after connecting via ssh)

vncviewer param LowColourLevel=2 localhost:5900
I got a nice low-rez, reasonably peppy session.

Last week, after installing openSUSE 11.0 (KDE4.1.1), the command "vncviewer" has a different set of options than it did under Sidux (I'm assuming they're different versions.)

When I connect under openSUSE, I never get anything less than full screen-rez/color-depth, etc...which is impossibly slow.   I've tried a number of options (which I have no idea if I'm using correctly.   (Here's a sample command I've tried):

vncviewer -compresslevel 8 -quality 2 -depth 8 localhost:5900

which give me the same result (high-rez, pathetically slow) as if I'd used to options at all...

What am I doing wrong?   In my desperate searching I've seen people suggest that "rez settings need to happen on the server end"--but I can set low rez options on MY end using Sidux and/or Windows XP.

That leads me to believe that I'm just not using an option(s) correctly...

Can you help a brother out?!

Thanks in advance...

All answers will be guessing until you tell us what version are you
running. The -help option should tell you version and cli options.

vncviewer -help

Try the following command:

  vncviewer -bgr233 localhost:5900

Probably, you actually need to send Meta modifier instead of Alt. If you
use the TightVNC Viewer 1.3.9 for Windows, try to turn on Scroll Lock.
That will cause the viewer to send Meta instead of Alt.

TightVNC does not pass Alt-Tab to the remote side, but there is a
workaround: you can press the "Alt" button on the toolbar, then use Tab
to switch between Windows, then release the toolbar button or hit Alt on
the keyboard. However, probably it's easier to select a window using
mouse instead of Alt-Tab.
