Problem with booting from local disk

Hello,

I downloaded and use Thinstation 2.2. I build image and prepare hard disk to local boot.
If I try to boot Thinstation 2.2 from local disk it goes right, but it stops on:
"Configuring and Starting Network …
Booting with manually configured network …
acpi – network_files -  "

and that’s all :-(

Boot process goes right if I start DHCP server in LAN, but I have to do local disk with out using dhcp server.

I would like to add that config file is reading from local disk, because if I have dhcp server, boot process
goes right and thinstation connects to rdp server which is defined in
/thinstation.profile/thinstation.conf.user . I saw that IP address of this station is from dhcp, not
from /thinstation.profile/thinstation.conf.user .

Any idea why it doesn’t boot without dhcp server ?

Second, I would like to ask how can I build image with thinstation.conf.buildtime ?
Now I prepare this file in root folder of thinstation, where build script and build.conf is .

My configs files:

### --- Modules to include in boot image --- ###
################################################

# Any modules may be added as "module" or "module_pkg".
# If defined as a "module", the driver is included in the boot image.
# If defined as a "module_pkg", the driver is added from outside the
# image, such as from a tftp server. See note below for more details.
#
# Normally you should use "module". Only use "module_pkg" if you want
# to dynamically load modules.

# Note: If you create a module_pkg network driver, and decide to load it
# from a tftp server, it won't work. This is because the image
# won't have a network driver to get the module_pkg in the first
#       place.

You have to build a new image.
1) place the driver file in the base directory of TS (e.g. Thinstation-2.2)
2) unpack it: tar xvfz <file name>.tar.gz
3) note the driver name from the print-out (e.g. <driver name>.ko)
4) add a line to build.conf with: module <driver>
5) rebuild.

To make a proper buildtime, first build "normally" with all the stuff
you want in build.conf. Next copy thinstation.conf.sample to
thinstation.conf.buildtime - still placed in the base directory as
build.cont etc. Edit this new file to your likings and you are set
when you just run build once more. NEVER EVER REUSE A CONFIG FILE FROM
A DIFFERENT TS VERSION. It should be obvious, but now I spelled it
out.

Try to make all on/off values ALL CAPS (e.g. ON and OFF). I din't
think it means anything today but at one time we did have a bug report
on this. Also, try to use the NET_DHCP_DELAY option is you have
spanning tree problems.

Remember - to use a thinstation.conf.user, you need to set a STORAGE_PATH.

BTW, get yourself 2.2.1rc3. It has a lot of bug fixes compared to 2.2
and as far as I know no new bugs not already present in 2.2 :-/

I do not think that this is a spanig tree problem, because I use simple switch - D-Link DES-1008D :-)
I had problem with spaning tree at work, where I use Cisco Catalyst switch, but I changed port to fast and it work.
Still is the problem with local boot.

Does the STORAGE_PATH should be set in thinstation.conf.buildtime ?
What exactly should I set if I use config stored on first hard disk partition ?
Now I have set in thinstation.conf.buildtime:

STORAGE_CONFIG1=/mnt/disc/hda/part1
STORAGE_CONFIG2=/mnt/disc/hda/part2
STORAGE_CONFIG3=/mnt/cdrom
STORAGE_CONFIG4=/mnt/usbdevice/sda1
STORAGE_CONFIG5=/mnt/floppy

# Workaround for a TS 2.2 bug:
# STORAGE_CONFIG* works only if a STORAGE_PATH is specified
 STORAGE_PATH=/dummy

And I want to ask, Thinstation 2.2.1rc3 is finished ?
I think that 2.2 is official version of TS and other are beta version. Is this correct?

Problem with loading snd-es18xx module

Hello,

Because I am only asking, I decided to share with others who use TS, how to resolve problem with loading
snd-es18xx :-)
I used TS 2.2 and now I use TS 2.2.rc3. In TS 2.2 and 2.2.rc3 there is a problem with loading snd-es18xx.
If you have similar problem try to add parameter isapnp=0 in build.conf. The line in build.conf should looks:

module snd-es18xx   isapnp=0                   # ESS AudioDrive ES18xx chips

Then try to build TS and use.

For me it works fine :-)

best regards
Jack

# Network card without a boot ROM using a boot floppy

    You may compensate for the lack of a boot ROM on the NIC by making
a bootable floppy. This solution is probably the most common.

        * Prepare everything as described above.
        * Go to www.rom-o-matic.net and make the bootable floppy as
explained at that site.
        * ... or get Paolo Silvan's contributed Universal network boot
floppy if your NIC is among the 30+ most popular.
