Some FYI and questions...

Hey all.

A while ago I had issues trying to get a boot splash screen to work with the
latest thin station release, but now it does.
I was using Macromedia Fireworks, I had read the docs on thinstation.org for
image settings with no success.
I switched to my FC4 workstation and made an image using GIMP, this work
first go and looks great. So for anyone out there using a recent version of
Fireworks it may not work.

Also I had compiled the thinstation client from the souce using pxe mode and
version 2.2 I have noticed on many of the clients some letters seem to come
up as numbers e.g. typing i would be a 5 . using a combo of fn scroll lock
or ctrl scroll lock changes it back. Anyone else had this issue, is there a
fix?

I've also had 1 client laptop hang, same deal ts 2.2 pxe load. its a Dell
1300 Inspirion using a broadcom nic. Any ideas? I choose the correct image
ts tries to load and laptop locks up black screen.

Another laptop has a realtek 8139 which is in the build.conf but ts is
saying unable to bind no nic?

Anyhelp would be great.

Cheers.

Thinstation 2.2 + Firefox 1.5.0.6 bugs (built with TSOM)

Hello all,

I have unusual problems with FireFox (1.5.0.6), when
starting it of latest Thinstation 2.2. Before I have used Thinstation 2.1.3
with FireFox 1.0.6 and had no problem. Both are built by TS-O-Matic. TS+FF
is used as browsing station for visitors. I am located in Lithuania; hence I
need support for Baltic charset in www pages.

Therefore I get two problems wit TS 2.2+FF 1.5.0.6:

                      1. The special Baltic characters are not displayed.
Instead in such places FireFox displays a small rectangle and within it -
2x2 numbers, perhaps special codes. I wonder, why this happens, because TS
2.1.3 + FF 1.0.6 everything was OK.

The only hypothesis is that there is no “75dpi fonts”
package to choose as built-in module in 2.2 TSOM. Such a package was for
TSOM 2.1.3.

                      2. I have problems with FF menus. It is very weird - I
cannot expand almost any menu in the FF. As soon as I click on the menu, it
is selected (changes colour), but its item list is not expanded below. For
some menus it works randomly, but as soon as I try to choose any menu item
below, it suddenly closes menu selection, as nothing has happened.

It looks to me (only hypothesis), that FF window
somehow receives input, like keyboard or mouse, and such input forces it to
loose focus menus.

The issue is that I cannot choose any menu item in

Re: after reboot -> PXE mof exiting..

I'm having the same problem here with thinstation 2.2.

I found out it is caused by a bug in the driver for the via rhine
chipset. It is fixed in 2.6.18 bij this commit:

commit b933b4d93888b584eda826bffa68a3a1283f8411
Author: Roger Luethi <rl@...>
Date: Mon Aug 14 23:00:21 2006 -0700

[PATCH] via-rhine: add option avoid_D3 (work around broken BIOSes)

It looks like broken BIOSes controlling Rhine chips will remain in use in
significant numbers; such systems fail to come up via PXE after they have
been put into D3 (power-saving) mode.

This patch adds a module option for disabling the call that puts the chip
    to sleep.

Hope this helps.

I thought it would have been something like that. I tested with a recent
epia ML ( probably a newer bios ), and there it was no issue.
Now i just have to find out how to get that new kernel in a thinstation
build.
thanks sander for the good news !

"Conky" contributed

A little something to make time until Christmas pass... I have
contributed "conky", a system and performance monitor for Thinstation
2.2. Not very useful, but nice to look at. A picture says more than a
1000 words, so look for yourself:

More than 1 X session.

Il would like to know if it is possible to have more than one X-session
at the same time...
Some commercial products (EON-Neoware for example) offer this...

Re: Thinstation & Compaq EvoT30 + T1010

Not without redoing the entire kernel. The EvoT30 uses a AMD Geode processor, AFAIK the thinstation kernel has no support for that.

Both NSC and AMD Geodes are i386 compatible - and hence that part work
with TS. There might (or might not) be bios concerns but previous
success stories using Neoware suggests it's possible.
