Google news to RSS

2 other convertors have turned up to turn Google News into RSS.

Perl
here --> http://googlenews.74d.com/files/getgoogle.pl

and in python
here --> http://www.muselog.net/download/googlenews.py

No why won't Google do this natively?

Re: My Yahoo! RSS Beta Launched...

A bit of inconsistency there:
at http://my.yahoo.com/s/rss-faq.html#findrssurl it says

"Go to My Yahoo!'s RSS edit page and paste ("Ctrl V") it into the "Add
URL" box."

There is no "Add URL" box, just a search that comes up with URL's
already in your database. I couldn't find a way to submit a new URL -
neither as user, nor as a publisher (to get my RSS listed).

I guess it's not entirely clear, but it works this way:

If you put the URL to an RSS feed into that box and hit the button,
we'll fetch it, verify it, and add it to our database so that it
  comes up in future searches.

If you put the URL to a web site that has RSS autodiscovery info in
it we'll fetch it, verify it, and add it to our database so that it
  comes up in future searches.

I *think* some of our other RSS folks are reading this can update the
docs. But I'll ping 'em if not.

In any case, beefing up the search needs to happen. There are folks
working on it for the non-Beta release.

I did that - entered the URL to an XML file - but it came up with
search results as a response, and the address I entered was not one of
them.

Also, there's a nice place telling people how important it is to
syndicate their sites and make public RSS files (which I have), but
there's nothing that says what to do afterwords to get this RSS listed
on Yahoo!
I mean not just as an ordinary user who wants a custom news source,
but as a publisher who wants his news to appear in users' searches.

Seeking Simple Spot for Metadata

We're about to launch a slew of sports-related RSS feeds, and are
trying to figure out how best to slip in some sports metacodes into
RSS 1.0. All we need are very simple strucures, a "bag" of sorts to
hold a few of these per <item>:

    <generic-code type="league" key="l.nhl.com" name="NHL"/>

where that type attribute would be "sport" or "league" or "team".

Seems silly to make up a new namespace for this, or to call in a
SportsML namespace for just an unordered set of generic pieces of
metadata.

Any advice?

Regards,
Alan.

It's not hard to make up a namespace -- from the looks of that element
it seems that you've almost done so with the "key" attribute.

Try:

<nhl:league>NHL</nhl:league>

with xmlns:nhl="http://nhl.com/nhl-rss-ns#" tagged onto the <rss>
element at the top of the feed.

XML namespaces are just what you want for unordered metadata ;)

Cheers,
Phil

"Add to My Yahoo!" buttons for RSS publishers

FYI, we have instructions on-line with buttons.

And, for those who don't like our buttons, there are unofficial buttons
in the wild too...

Congrats to RSS

The Wired Rave Award nominees are up, and I got a nomination for my work with RSS.

That puts RSS in pretty good company, the other nominees are Friendster, BitTorrent, Skype and iTunes.

Yahoo News RSS

Is there an RSS output version of the new Yahoo! Search to go with that
for the Yahoo! News Search?

Incidentally, I just spotted the Advanced search form has a "File
Format: Only find results that are in RSS" option.

RE: Re: BBC News RSS

Thanks to Jeff and pavka14 for spurring us into action on the RSS
directory front.

We've had a go at producing an OPML file for each of our sites outlining
the RSS feeds available on the site. An example of this can be found at

http://news.bbc.co.uk/rss/newsonline_uk_edition/feeds.opml

That said we have implemented a bit of a hodge podge of attributes for
the outline tags because we have been having difficulty finding a
definite list of which outline attributes should be used for listing RSS
files in OPML and the examples have been found are not entirely
consistent for example

In Jeff's,
http://www.syndic8.com/genfeed.php?Format=opml&UserID=jeffbarr&List=14
outline text attribute is set to the channel title tag
outline description attribute is set to the channel description
tag
outline xmlUrl attribute is set to the URL of the RSS feed
outline htmlUrl attribute is set to channel link tag
outline language attribute is set to the the language of the RSS
feed
	has an outline id attribute.

In Dave's, http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/myPublicFeeds.opml it is
basically the same but
outline type attribute is set to 'rss'
	no id attribute
	no language attribute
	no htmlUrl attribute

I've also seen
outline version attribute is set to 'RSS' e.g.
http://www.w3os.nl/logos/opml/rss.opml and
http://www.labourstart.org/rss/labourstart.opml

outline title attribute is set to the channel title tag e.g.
http://www.lockergnome.com/rss/lockergnome.opml

We also have a deep tree structure for the sections in our site which we
have flattened out when listing our RSS feeds in this OPML file. We did
this because we were concerned that existing parsers used by News
Readers and aggregation sites may not parse this correctly.

Any indication of where to find a definitive guide to which attributes
to use or feedback on improving the OPML file we have produced would be
welcomed.

Joel

I created a Syndic8 Personal List with the newest BBC feeds. You can
download the list in a variety of formats:

OPML:
http://www.syndic8.com/genfeed.php?Format=opml&UserID=jeffbarr&List=14
OCS:
http://www.syndic8.com/genfeed.php?Format=ocs&UserID=jeffbarr&List=14
RSS: http://www.syndic8.com/genfeed.php?UserID=jeffbarr&List=14

You can also see the contents of the list on my user page:

http://www.syndic8.com/userinfo.php?Section=list_14

If you want to learn more about the Personal List system, take a peek at
this:

Enjoy,

Jeff;
