Correct smokeping config

Dear,

I've tried to set up smokeping on a centos 5.5 VPS system, but...i failed...
I've used the how-to that you can find on
http://www.how2centos.com/installing-smokeping-on-centos-5-5/

The problems :
- i've added 2 new smokes, restart smokeping and...smokeping doesn't
generate RRD files
- the 2 graphs that are created (RRD), doesn't collect any pings
- smoketrace doesn't work at all

Is there anyone who can give me some advice or want to take a look at
the server?
Right now, it's only one server, but i want to set smokeping+smoketrace
on all my VPS servers (the only thing they have to do is backup dns and
smokeping ;-))

Smokeping : http://s01.ua.it2go.eu/smokeping/smokeping.cgi

Best regards and thanks!

Kris

The first thing that I would check is file/directory permissions.
Assuming that you are running apache, make sure that your apache user
is able to write to the directory you've specified for your rrd files.

Re: Correct smokeping config

As Darren said, this is likely a permissions issue. Usually only the rrd file owner has rw permission. The
most common problem I see that causes this is someone launched smokeping under the wrong user account
(like root) instead of the user it should be running under. As a result, all rrd files are owned by root. When
you restart and specify the right user, all the files that were previously created cannot be modified by
the correct user account, hence graphs not updating. A quick chown -R of the datadir specifying the
appropriate user account is usually the fix. Just check and see who owns all the rrd files. Change it to
whatever the appropriate account smokeping should be running under. Hope this helps.

How to configure "Hierachy"?

Hello,

I would like to use the 'Hierachy' feature to have a more structured view on my targets.

On the demo site (http://smokeping.basemirror.de/smokeping-demo/?target=Customers.OP) there are
two, "Default Hierachy" and "Tobias Favorites" - exactly that is what I want, but how can it be achieved?

OS:   			Debian Squeeze (amd64)
Smokeping Version:	SmokePing-2.3.6

Thank you in advance,
Chris

Error

Hi guys

I am new to smokeping and I have managed to get the application running but cannot get it to display anything, it either says  “ERROR: creating  /var/www/html/smokeping/img/services”   or if I click on one of the servers in the list I configured it says UNKNOWN.

HELP.

I believe this could be my config but where should I start to look.

Regards

Andrew

Re: Error

In my experience it is usually rights. the wrong user with the wrong
permissions to the wrong directories.

multi targets

Hi,

there's an option to graph multiple targets in one drawing. Very nice and
impressive!

But, is it possible to do the following:
We often use Loadbalancers, so we can do a loadbalanced access via port 80
and a direct (debug/monitoring) real server access via hight ports, p. e.
port 8081, 8082, and so on.

It would be nice to graph response and latency based on real server access
in _one_ graph based on access to _one_ host (means one ip) and different
ports.

But how to configure?

Thanks for any hints and suggestions!

With regards
martin

Interesting Charts view

Hi
In smokeping the interesting charts view can it be customised to reflect
particular targets?
Or alternatively, can I have different Interesting Chart views for
particular Targets?

Thanks in advance for your input

Suppress Graph in Default Hierarchy

Hi,

how do I prevent a target from showing up in the 'Default Hierarchy'?

Here is my testing setup:

/etc/smokeping/config.d/Presentation:
+ hierarchies
++ Core
title = Core Routers
++ Backbone
title = Backbone Routers

/etc/smokeping/config.d/Targets:

+ CoreRouters
title = Core Routers
menu = CoreRouters
parents = Core:/

++ Site1
Title = Site1
menu = Site1
parents = Core:/CoreRouters
host = 192.168.100.10

If I do so, CoreRouters shows up in hierarchy 'Default Hierarchy' and in 'Core' but I do not want that it could
be seen in 'Default Hierarchy'.

Does anybody have a suggestion how I can achieve that?

Thanks
Chris
