FPing errors

Hello,

I've been happily using smokeping for quite a while probing 100s of
targets, using quite a few different probes. Recently, I ve noticed
a lot of log entries like the following :

Oct 23 09:37:27 xxxx smokeping[11748]: Argument "0.-182353260" isn't numeric in sort at
/usr/local/smokeping/lib/probes/FPing.pm line 105, <GEN2828> line 1.
Oct 23 09:37:46 xxxx smokeping[11748]: Argument "20/20/0%," isn't numeric in sort at
/usr/local/smokeping/lib/probes/FPing.pm line 105, <GEN2828> line 2.
Oct 23 09:37:46 xxxx smokeping[11748]: Argument "12.9/14.1/28.6" isn't numeric in sort at
/usr/local/smokeping/lib/probes/FPing.pm line 105, <GEN2828> line 2.

The result is that for the given interval, I get black lines on all my FPing targets.
I dont see a particular pattern in time for those messages (sometimes every hour,
sometimes once per day etc...)

It seems like FPing.pm is getting unusual fping output and has problem parsing it.
I haven't performed any upgrades to fping or smokeping.

I'm running Smokeping 1.30 and fping 2.4b2_to (from Tobi's site)

Any ideas?

Re: FPing errors

Hi Dez,

I agree with your assessment ... it would help if you could figure
out what output fping is creating here ...

Using Multiple Probes

Is it possible to do multiple probes, specifically, fping and cURL
probes from the same configuration file?

Any insite would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Joe

I'm not sure I understand what you mean here.
The expected fping output should be something similar to:

www.mozilla.org    : 206.46 205.65 206.10 206.10 205.91 205.90 206.01 206.02 205.76 205.90 206.28 205.77
206.32 205.84 206.31 206.06 206.31 206.44 206.17 206.55
www.oddrecords.com : 0.47 0.31 0.39 0.27 0.32 0.42 0.27 0.28 0.32 0.42 0.42 0.29 0.29 0.35 0.35 0.40 0.29
0.29 0.27 0.26

What I'm getting in the logs is 100s of pairs of these kind of log entries:

Nov  5 14:31:58 kung smokeping[4505]: Argument "20/20/0%," isn't numeric in sort at
/usr/local/smokeping/lib/probes/FPing.pm line 105, <GEN389> line 158.
Nov  5 14:31:58 kung smokeping[4505]: Argument "0.24/0.29/0.39" isn't numeric in sort at
/usr/local/smokeping/lib/probes/FPing.pm line 105, <GEN389> line 158.

The first one, I guess is something like num_of_packets_sent/num_of_packets_received/loss(%)
and the second one looks like min/avg/max RTT

I dont know what to make of it :(

Re: Using proxy for Curl

Hi All,
Is there a way to specify a proxy address in the smokeping config file to
measure http and https performance through the Curl probe. I want to be
able to measure responses for various internet sites through the proxy
server.

Any ideas, Here is a sample from my config file.

+ Services
menu = Services
title = Check Service Availability

++ HTTP
menu = HTTP
title = HTTP Availability
probe = Curl

+++ Yahoo
## I should be able to specify a proxy server IP or host here
menu = www.yahoo.com
title = www.yahoo.com HTTP availability
host = www.yahoo.com
++++ PROBE_CONF
url = http://www.yahoo.com

Thanks
Kamran

CURL & Redirect

I wonder if I can use the CURL probe to validate and measure redirects
as well as a "static" page?

For example, on one server I am trying to monitor, it has a home page
of:

www.xxxx.com <http://www.xxxx.com/> .

When it is working properly, it redirects to:

www.xxxx.com/page/home_CORP

Would CURL work for this or would it just see the redirected URL?

DNS BIND Utilities

I am a newbie and wan to collect DNS stats using smokeping. In the docs it
mentions about downloading bind 9 utilities. Where can I download bind 9
utilities? The sunfreeware.com only has Bind 9 full packages. Any help in
this regard would be appreciated.

Thanks
