No data on smokeping graphs

After uneventfuly setting up smokeping-1.5 I am not getting any data on the graphs for well known
and tested targets/hosts. Smokeping runs, as per the installatin instructions, but I get empty
graphs.

Attached is my config file

No data on smokeping graphs

I would appreciate any help I can get.

I have smokeping-1.6 installed and running, webpages are fine no errors, all perl modules and
needed programs have been installed(to the best of my knowledge) and my rrd's are being updated
every five minutes with 0's. I have no data on the graphs. To be sure that I wasnt getting flat
lines that I couldn read, I am pinging www.china.com which has ping times of around 235ms in both
fping and ping. Does anyone have any troubleshooting ideas that I can use to see why the rrd's
have semm to be getting no data from fping? Any response or help is appreciated.

Smokeping Suggestion - No data on graph..... fixed

Apparently if bin/smokeping is not run as root then fping cannot be called/run either so there
will be no data on the graph as no pings will get sent..... I would like to suggest that for the
next update that smokeping complains when it is run by a user that does not have priviledges to
execute fping.(and any other scripts for that matter)

Thanks Tobi.

Re: Smokeping Suggestion - No data on graph..... fixed

Hi!

Fping can be run with user privileges only. But in Debian -for example- its
installed under /usr/sbin, so yo need too put use the full path to fping in
the Probe configuration, so it can be found by the programm when it's run a
user.

Regards

Upgrading from

Hi all,

I just did an install of 1.7 and copied config and data files (var/) from
another machine which was running 0.9907. I updated the config file by
adding piddir and unison_tolerance.

The data seems to be okay in the summary graphs, but if I try to view an
actual target page, I get the error "ERROR: World.Europe.UK has no probe
defined" (or whatever the parent target group was). Someone had mentioned
this means a missing probe= line but I do have one immediately after ***
Targets ***

I have the latest rrdtool and fping, setuid root as follows:
-rwsr-x--- 1 root smokepin 70092 Apr 14 18:41 /usr/local/sbin/fping

The daemon runs as smokeping.smokeping and the webserver runs as
www-data.www-data (tried changing the file permissions, same problem)

I attach the config file with most of the targets removed for brevity.

Secondly, and this has been a problem in the earlier version too, every
time I modify the config file I get an Internal Server Error on the next
pageview and the following in the error log:

[Sun Apr 14 20:16:24 2002] [error] [client 194.222.32.192] malformed
header from script. Bad header=</div>:

I'm running SpeedyCGI though the previous server was running perl

ERROR: x.y has no probe defined

Hi all.

Checked the archives, found the same question asked recently, and a
request to post problem config file, but no follow up.

I have installed smokeping-1.7 on FreeBSD 4.5. I modified the config to
suit my needs, though its not working. Fping is polling the specified
hosts at the specified intervals and putting data into RRDs, and in the
summary pages I get summary graphs, but when I click on the graphs for
details I get the error:

ERROR: Internet.Root-Servers has no probe defined

If I include the "probe = FPing" at that level in the hierarchy I get
this error:

ERROR: Internet.Root-Servers FPing is not known

I've redone the config file about 3 times to no avail. Any suggestion
would be appreciated. See config below.

Thanks in advance.

PS. I know there are a lot of graphs in the details section. This is
just so I can get a sense of which will be useful to me. I will trim
later.

Re: Upgrading from

Hi,

I too am having the same problems...

I stopped using 1.5 due to problems I was having with echoping, however,
I decided to try 1.7 and found I was getting the problems you describe
below...

Thinking perhaps this was something that had changed in 1.7, I tried
1.6, this too had the same problems, so, to attempt to rule out anything
that had changed in those versions, I went back to using the original
install of 1.5... Again, the same problems...

I'm beginning to wonder if it is something to do with possibly upgrading
perl in the time since I last tried smokeping, but I can't say this for
certain and I am using speedycgi with nothing having changed there...

I'm confused...

No I haven't had a response yet but numerous off-list e-mails asking me
to share the solution when I eventually get it.

It seems to me that this is not a problem only we are experiencing
(reference thread 'Upgrading from') so I expect there should be someone
with a solution shortly.

Note: I've attached my original post as well as the 'Upgrading from'
thread and cc'd this response for the benefit of the list.

Hi Greg,
I saw your April 20, 2002 posting on the Smokeping mailing list with the
subject 'ERROR: x.y has no probe defined' about the 'ERROR:
Internet.Root-Servers has no probe defined' you get when you click on
one of your summary graphs. Have you had this problem resolved yet? I'm
getting the same error on my output and I'm just *frustrated* because I
can't find anything on the web that has a slight hint on how to fix this
problem. So if you could give me any clues on this I'd really appreciate
it.

Re: Smokeping

Hi Greg,

I had something similar. There were two things that I needed to do in
order to get smokeping running - perhaps one or two of them may help
you...

Firstly, I needed to set the fping binary setuid, something like,

 chown root /usr/local/sbin/fping
 chmod u+s /usr/local/sbin/fping

Secondly, I needed to alter the path to fping in the file,

 /opt/smokeping-1.6/lib/probes/FPing.pm

Naturally, that file will probably be in a slighly different position o
your system..

Just near the top you will see,

 *** Probes ***
 + FPing
 binary = /usr/local/sbin/fping

Make sure the binary line points to your real fping - there was some
really strange path in there until I updated mine to above.

Good luck,
