Char set support

Hi,

I'd like to add some Chinese characters to the graph display. In config
file, I added "charset = gb2312" and some Chinese characters in title
section and it caused "Internal Server Error" when accessing the page.

What is the right way to do this?

Thanks for the help.

thanks,
-Kerry Hu

Hi Kerry,

I have no experiance with the requirements of chinese web output
... so you have to help me here ... try running smokeping.cgi from
the command line and see what it has to say and if this is
consistant with the behaviour of a cgi working in chinese ...

cheers

Grey bars

I just installed this tool - it is wonderful!! I saw a question a while
back but never saw the answer - I have the same question:

what do the grey bars represent (above and below the median ping RTT)

Thanks in advance

Re: Grey bars

They're a graphical representation of the return time of all the ping packets. The darker the grey, the more
packets returned at that time interval.

Announce Smokeping 1.4

Folks,

I have released SmokePing 1.4

There are some minor bugfixes but THE BIG THING is a contributed
set of probes by Niko Tyni. He wrote a wrapper for the versatile
echoping program. Three cheers to Finnland.

The documentation is on the website

http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~oetiker/webtools/smokeping/probes

Also note, that 1.4 adds a new mandatory config variable called
piddir where you can define the location of the pid file.

When upgrading smokeping, make sure to 'touch' any cgi script
running via speedy or you might be testing the old thing.

take care

Problems with EchoPing Probe

Does anyone have a working config that uses EchoPing? I need to use it,
as I need to check the latency on a couple mail servers that do not
respond to ping, however when I add it my config and restart, I get the
following error:

Restarting smokeping: ### fping seems to report in 1 miliseconds
Base class package "probes::basevars" is empty.
(Perhaps you need to 'use' the module which defines that package
first.) at
/usr/lib/perl5/smokeping//probes/basefork.pm line 64
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at
/usr/lib/perl5/smokeping//probes/basefork.pm

Compilation failed in require at (eval 10) line 3.
 ...propagated at /usr/share/perl/5.6.1/base.pm line 18.

line 121.
Compilation failed in require at (eval 9) line 3.

Cheers,

Jeff

Downtime and average response extraction

Hello all
Does anyone know an easy way ( I mean without dumping and
parsing all the time the rrd files) to get smokeping to write a log when
a host is unreachable. Also I would be very pleased if I could find a
way to get automaticaly the average response time (the value that is
shown in the graphs). Any ideas on these?
Thnx in advance

Michael

This is because one perl module was missing from SmokePing 1.4.
Get 1.5 and try again.

smokeping and speedycgi

Hello smokeping-users,

I´m trying to setup smokeping 1.5 on a Solaris 8 machine, Apache 1.3.22,
perl 5.6.1 - but I´m
stuck with SpeedyCGI 2.11 :-(

Running make ends up with this:

gcc -DSOLARIS2=280 -DUSE_EXPAT -I../lib/expat-lite -DNO_DL_NEEDED
-I/opt/apache_1.3.22a/include -I../src -I. -DSPEEDY_PROGNAME=\"m
od_speedycgi\" -DSPEEDY_VERSION=\"2.11\" -DSPEEDY_FRONTEND -c
speedy_optdefs.c
  -o mod_speedycgi.so speedy_optdefs.o speedy_opt.o speedy_script.o
speedy_group.o speedy_ipc.o speedy_poll.o speedy_slot.o speedy_
file.o speedy_backend.o speedy_frontend.o speedy_util.o mod_speedycgi.o
apxs:Break: Command failed with rc=16777215
*** Error code 1
make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `mod_speedycgi.so'
Current working directory /root/CGI-SpeedyCGI-2.11/mod_speedycgi
*** Error code 1
make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `subdirs'

Sam Horrocks says it sounds like an API change of apache which he´ll figure
out - he recommends
to use an older version of Apache.
