Same situation with this month's outdated files and it displayed the files to
be deleted, so I can't explain what I saw when I filed this bug since nothing
else changed since then that I'm aware of. However, I don't control the client
rsync version.

Linux rsync server

Hi All,

I am trying to characterize Linux machine running OS Sles9 as rsync server.

The purpose of this server is to run rsync commands over SSH using daemon or interactively.

There could be hundreds of rsync jobs running simultaneously on the server.

Do you have any suggestions about the system requirements? It could be SW, HW, what ever….

Thanks,

Oren Mark

Time entries in rsync log

Hi,

I get strange time entries in the rsync log, For example:

2006/07/02 14:56:12 [20054] rsync to upload/aspen/nhm from plxc6266.pdx.intel.com (10.25.26.90)

2006/07/02 11:56:22 [20054] wrote 28 bytes  read 3582404 bytes  total size 32030720

The first entry in the correct time and second is strange. I checked and this is not the time on the destination.

Any ideas what is the reason for that?

Thanks,

Oren Mark

Re: Time entries in rsync log

This happened to me too (2.6.3)
Have never looked into it deeply, but I did notice that this happens with the hour value only.
I have since changed to 2.6.8 but I cant remember whether this kept happenning or not.

This usually indicates that you have "use chroot = yes" and your C
library doesn't remember the timezone prior to the chroot() occurring.
The code in CVS (which will go into 2.6.9) attempts to work around this
problem by ensuring that strftime() gets called prior to the chroot()
call. So, it you might want to try using the CVS version or the
attached patch on your current rsync version to see if the problem goes
away.

Another possible solution is to set the TZ environment variable outside
of rsync so that the C library can determine the timezone when the
/etc/timezone file is not present.

Max number of files to transfer

Hey,

Is it possible to make rsync only transfer a maximum amount of files at
one time. I want to do this to make the initial set up time of the
filelist before transfer to be reasonably predictable.

Rsync is basically going to transfer from one mailbox to another mailbox
but I want to be able to only transfer say 50 files at a time. I know
this can be solved by controlling the number of files in the source
directory but was wondering if there is anyway to achieve this using
rsync itself.

Thanks in advance,
Adrian

ASCII colors in MOTD

Hi all,

For some time I noticed that my rsync server is not showing a colorfull MOTD...

Researching a bit, it turns out to be a problem since rsync-2.6.7 (rsync-2.6.6 is OK).

Looking at the NEWS:
    - The way rsync escapes unreadable characters has changed. First, rsync
now has support for recognizing valid multibyte character sequences in
your current locale, allowing it to escape fewer...

So apparently this is to be blamed. Can anybody at least confirm this, or should I
directly file a bug?

For example you can see my MOTD by:

	rsync -v rsync://rsync.tar.bz/gentoo-portage/NO_SUCH_FILE

It used to be a sleeping magenta cat on green grass...
Now the escape is escaped and becomes:

\#033[35m |\ _.,,---,._ \#033[33m/ \
\#033[35mZZzz. /,`.-'`' -. ;-;;,_ \#033[33m\ Kanagawa, Japan /
\#033[35m |,4- ) )-,_. ,\ ( `'-' \#033[33m \ /
\#033[35m '---''(u/--' `-'\_) \#033[33m \_____________/
\#033[32m ~~tar.bz~~~tar.bz~~~tar.bz~~ \#033[33m

AFAIR, this escaping was intended only for filenames, right?
And BTW, adding -8 does not change anything.

Anybody?

Kalin.

No, that is not something that rsync supports. It would be fairly easy
to add such a check into the generator.c code, but I'm not presently
inclined to include this in the regular release, so this would need to
be something that you patch into your own version of rsync.
