: MPLS Supported Cisco Routers

Hi All,

Good Day!

May I request to know what are the Cisco Routers (Platforms) that can be used as PE and P Routers?

Appreciate your assistance!

Thanks and Regards,

According to this:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/iosswrel/ps6537/ps6557/prod_white_paper0900aecd8051fbdc.html

P and PE functionality can go down to as low as the 1841
router, but nothing lower (although I'd be wary of using
these smaller routers for much in the way of MPLS, apart
from small PE or CE routers). Anything above that is likely
supported as well, up to the CRS-1.

On the switch side, the 6500 is also supported, with the
SUP720 supervisor engine.

Note, though, that features and functionality will differ
among platforms, for all sorts of reasons (software,
hardware, product positioning, commercial agenda, e.t.c.).

In my experience, I've typically seen the 7200-VXR platform
used as the minimum for either P or PE functionality.

You'd need to provide more specific information if you need
extra detail.

Cheers,

Mark.

Re: : MPLS Supported Cisco Routers

Jun,

Before asking for hardware selection assistance it would be helpful if
you clarified what you are trying to accomplish. There are a bunch of
options when it comes to MPLS but it obviously depends on the size of
the environment and some of the features you hope to enable.

Re: : MPLS Supported Cisco Routers

Anyway don't use Cisco 7600 as a PE that is not a real router and it
has lots of restrictions on feature parity and the module combinations.

It can be a product which you can use as L2 access aggregation and
also as a P router which will do only lable swapping.

There may be different ideas on this aspect but having introduced lots
of services module cannot disguise platform limitations

Re: : MPLS Supported Cisco Routers

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the valuable information you provided.
By the way, the purpose is to set up MPLS Setup for our IT Lab in our company. For this setup, do you recommend using 2800 routers?

Thanks,
Jun

RE: : MPLS Supported Cisco Routers

Jun,

If this is for lab or practice, I would advise you to get Dynamips, which emulates Cisco routers, check www.dynagen.org  or www.gns3.net  This will give the freedom to emulate 3600 all the way 7200 which can do L2VPN (AToM), and ATM. Good luck

It depends... what features are you interested in testing?
MPLS has a wide range of applications beyond being just
another method used to forward traffic.

Do you want to test traffic engineering, VPN's, fast re-
route, OAM, e.t.c.?

Some of Cisco's routers support only some of these features,
either as software or hardware restrictions. Of course, the
larger boxes support nearly (if not) all of them, but that
might be too pricey for a lab.

Liban's advice to use Dynamips might be a better suggestion,
as a start.

Cheers,

Mark.

Re: : MPLS Supported Cisco Routers

Some answers to common questions can be tricky and you would expect some effect. Some of us have budget constraints. It might be a straightforward question as everyone knows about the different series and equip. models but has a bit of a double meaning.
I am sure that channel partners are able to advise you the best way or the account management at Cisco Systems. You can chose an indenpendent view of course.  you just need to be more specific on what you are trying to achieve. How big is your network , what kit are you migrating across to an MPLS/VPN/V4-v6 scenario and what services are you running as well as plan ahead concurrent connections and global ip traffic forecast.
