from network failed: status = -1 error = Message too long

Well, I have a pptpd server running, and windows clients can connect to
it with no problem and download any and all data.

But when I try to connect via a linux client, I get this error in the
pptpd server:
  Dec 1 11:34:09 vpn pptpd[4534]: GRE: read(fd=6,buffer=8055600,len=8260)
from network failed: status = -1 error = Message too long
Dec 1 11:34:09 vpn pptpd[4534]: CTRL: GRE-tunnel has collapsed (GRE
read or PTY write failed (gre,pty)=(6,5))

This occurs when I try to download certain web pages. Simple pings can
traverse the link quite easily before I try to get a webpage.

Thank you for your help, sorry if this should have gone to the pptp
client mailing list.

What version of ppp, poptop, mppe, and pptp-client are you running? This
looks like an MTU problem. Are you allowing ICMP packets between the client
and server? If ICMP doesn't fix the problem for you, you could try this
hack:

Server:
pppd version 2.4.2
PPPoE-Server Version 3.5
Dont know how to check for the mppe version on the server, but it runs
as a module called ppp_mppe.ko
PoPToP v1.1.4-b4

Client:
pppd version 2.4.2
PPPoE Version 3.5
pptp-linux version 1.5.0
Poptop v1.2.1

I can ping the vpn server outside the VPN connection, and through the
VPN connection. So ICMP are enabled.

I am about to try those options now... Thank you.

FYI, this site fixed me right up. I had to set the MTU and MRU inside
the pptp options file, then manually change the MTU on the ppp1
interface, and everything worked fine :) Thank you.

Start by telling us what version of pptpd, kernel and ppp you are using.
List your pptpd.conf file.

Re: poptop server crashes with more than 16 users

I've dealt with a *lot* of instability issues (still am really, but am
getting close to relative stability these days). Maybe your problems
are similar?

What type of hardware are you running on? Linux kernel version?
Poptop version? PPP version? MPPE version (if any)?

Re: poptop server crashes with more than 16 users

ok, it's true. Thanks both for your answers.
Wel, this is my config:

kernel:
2.4.28 #1 Tue Nov 23 00:38:05 CET 2004 i686 GNU/Linux

The Linux is an Debian GNU/Linux (woody)
pppd version 2.4.2b1
PoPToP v1.1.2

I'm using the Jan Dubiec MPPE implementation
(http://www.polbox.com/h/hs001/)

The machine:
Pentium IV, 2.8, with 1GB RAM.

I don't see nothing strange in the syslog. The poptop
aparently works fine, but, it dosn't work ok.

I'm reading about this problem.
Thx !! =)
