ONMS 1.6.10 - java taking 100% of CPU

New install of ONMS 1.6.10 on FC12.  Discovered a few devices without any problem.  I then added several IP address ranges to discover which should find approximately 500 devices.  System is now really slow with java consuming 100% of CPU.   Where do I begin ?

Antw: ONMS 1.6.10 - java taking 100% of CPU

Take a look at the tuning guide: http://www.opennms.org/wiki/Performance_tuning

I would start adding memory to java as described there. You have a lot of memory free, I would propose to give
the jvm 2-3 GB RAM.

Abstraction between Monitoring Areas

Hi

We are using opennms to monitor areas that are totally distinct in their duties and tasks. One of the requirements is to isolate each area completely, meaning that they can only see their nodes, alarms...events..notifications....like they were different OpenNMS installations. Following the dashboard/categories/user approach is halfway for what we need. Basically, i would like to know if it is possible to customize OpenNMS in way that each area will be limited to their own world. One example would be to have 2 servers one for each area...1 database server with 2 opennms instances...and remote pollers connecting to the relevant server ... does this sound like a feasible approach?  Or is this possible to accomplish just by using filters and other features? Any ideas are welcome.

Thank you
Regards
A

Re: Antw: ONMS 1.6.10 - java taking 100% of CPU

Thank you Michael, the system is functioning after increasing the
JAVA_HEAP_SIZE parameter. I'll keep the tuning reference in mind as I
get further into the application. Thanks again for your response.

Antw: Re: Can I upgrade 1.6.8 to 1.7.10?

Just do it... you have to merge your config files after the upgrade as usual, take backups before you start,
the database will be changed during upgrade. On solaris there might be a small problem, on Suse 11.2 it was
smooth, other systems I don't know.
