Discovery Issues

I've been trying to get OpenNMS running on a Fedora Core 5 box with Tomcat4
and the current build of OpenNMS, but Discovery refuses to start. I've gotten
it to the point where I get the following error messages. If anyone has any
suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

[Error Message, discovery.log]

Re: problem during installing/opt/OpenNms/bin/install -disU

It looks like you are using the wrong version of Java – you need Sun’s and not GCJ’s.  If you are running Sun’s, do a

./runjava –s from the opennms home directory.

Re: Discovery Issues

You're using gcc java (see the lines with libgcj?)
You have to use Sun's java.

This is probably the number one faq / problem with
opennms.

It should be given a more prominent place in the
install FAQ.

Opennms partially running and web interface has experinced error

hi i installed the OPennms, but i am facing a new problem i.e when i issue the command opennms -v status it shows me follwoing output OpenNMS.Eventd : starting OpenNMS.Trapd : starting OpenNMS.Actiond : running OpenNMS.Capsd : starting OpenNMS.Notifd : running OpenNMS.Scriptd : running OpenNMS.Rtcd : starting OpenNMS.Pollerd : starting OpenNMS.Collectd : starting OpenNMS.Threshd : starting OpenNMS.Discovery : starting OpenNMS.Vacuumd : running opennms is partially running The other thing when i try to login to web interface it shows me the Web User Interface Has Experienced an Error The webUI has encountered an exception condition that it does not know how to handle. Possible causes could be that the database is not responding, the OpenNMS application has stopped or is not running, or there is an issue with Tomcat. You can try going to the main page and hitting "refresh" in your browser, but there is a good chance that will have no effect. Please bring this to the attention of the person responsible for maintaining OpenNMS for your organization, and have them insure that OpenNMS, Tomcat and the database are all running without errors. It looks like something is using the port you are trying to use. When
does this error occur? Did you look in the log files for ERROR and
FATAL messages?

Adding a category for SAP gives category has no listeners

Hello List,

How to add a category to the main screen of OpenNMS? I tried to add a
category for SAP/R3, but it doesn't appear and the log files come up
with the following message rtc.log):

2006-07-07 16:42:38,974 DEBUG [DataSenderPool-fiber0] DataSender: In
DataSender sendData()
2006-07-07 16:42:38,974 DEBUG [DataSenderPool-fiber0] DataSender:
DataSender:sendData(): Category 'SAP/R3 Servers
2006-07-07 16:42:38,974 DEBUG [DataSenderPool-fiber0] DataSender:
DataSender: category 'SAP/R3 Servers' has no listeners

The name of the poller and capsd service was before: "SAP/R3 00" till
"SAP/R3 02", which worked fine, but then the category was added which
needs a rule like isSAP_R3_00 (spaces are tricky here). Another form of
isSAP-R3-00 gave errors during the startup of rtc.

Then things went wrong: the SAP/R3 servers is not displayed in the
main menu and neither in the hosts that had the discovery and polling
OK before...

The following was added to the xml configuration files:

capsd-configuration.xml

        <protocol-plugin protocol="SAP_R3_00" class-name="org.opennms.
netmgt.capsd.TcpPlugin" scan="on" user-defined="false">
                <property key="banner" value="*"/>
                <property key="port" value="3200"/>
                <property key="timeout" value="3000"/>
                <property key="retry" value="2"/>
        </protocol-plugin>
        <protocol-plugin protocol="SAP_R3_01" class-name="org.opennms.
netmgt.capsd.TcpPlugin" scan="on" user-defined="false">
                <property key="banner" value="*"/>
                <property key="port" value="3201"/>
                <property key="timeout" value="3000"/>
                <property key="retry" value="2"/>
        </protocol-plugin>
        <protocol-plugin protocol="SAP_R3_02" class-name="org.opennms.
netmgt.capsd.TcpPlugin" scan="on" user-defined="false">
                <property key="banner" value="*"/>
                <property key="port" value="3202"/>
                <property key="timeout" value="3000"/>
                <property key="retry" value="2"/>
        </protocol-plugin>

To the poller-configuration.xml

                <service name="SAP_R3_00" interval="300000" user-
defined="false" status="on">
                        <parameter key="retry" value="1"/>

                        <parameter key="port" value="3200"/>
                        <parameter key="timeout" value="3000"/>

                        <parameter key="timeout" value="3000"/>
                </service>

and also to the poller-configuration.xml:

I can see that in some cases this might cause a problem. What
exactly is the problem this is causing for you? Is this a data
collection problem for some performance attribute you are attempting
to graph? Is this a value you are trying to monitor with the Poller?

I suggest more clarification about the problem you are having, show
us output from your logs, provide us with configurations that you
have attempted, and it's always helpful to provide SNMP walk output
for the OID(s) in question.
