Linkd Shows Wrong Links!

Hello everyone!

I have a major problem. The output of linkd differs from the actual architecture of my fiber linked switches
and routers! The physical architecture tallies with the output of cisco's "show cdp neighbors command",
but linkd displays totally odd and wrong links.

What could cause this problem and how can I solve it?

Thanks so much.
Jade.

Using different context for SNMP V3 or multiple v1/2 communities for one IP-Address

Hello,

I need some help on a chassis based DSLAM from keymile.

There is either the possibility to access it via snmp v1/2 or v3. The various modules/cards in the DSLAM are handled via a master agent and unit specific subagents. To access the unit-agents via SNMP v1/2 I have to address them with unit specific communities.

1. Is there a way to achieve this in ONMS using v1/2, as I have various communities and only one IP-address of the DSLAM ?

2. If I do not use SNMP v1/2 but SNMP v3: Is there a way to access different contexts for one IP address ? How would this be configured in snmp-config.xml.

All Agents listen at the standard udp port. So I can not use different ports to discriminate the contexts or cards.

Best regard

Hans

Re: Using different context for SNMP V3 or multiplev1/2 communities for one IP-Address

Hello, some further thoughts….

Would it be possible to realize this via different collection packages ( one in context1/community1 for Module 1, one for context2/community2 for Module 2 and so on). So the question is there a way to specify different contexts/communities for specific ip addresses in different packages ?

Regards

Hans

Re: High Threshold for ifInDiscards + ifOutDiscards

Hi John,

thanks for your reply, but I am "only" the Linux guy administrating the
ONMS system and try to investigate the problems my colleagues throw
over. I am not really into the Cisco stuff, but my networking colleagues
seem not to be aware of this problem.
So with your hint I googled and found:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk648/tk362/technologies_q_and_a_item09186a00800b69ac.shtml

So this seems to be the problem and I need to use the 64 bit counters on
that device. I was thinking ONMS maybe is smart enough to use the
correct counters on "standard" Gigabit devices.
So that was a good lesson for me...

Hi,
how about setting up a virtual machine. Maybe VMware Player and Converter.
So you can try with a copy of your machine and a fresh new installation.
Maybe it's a faulty configuration file and you might test your installation with the original files.
Could be hard work but you wont have to reinstall and reconfigure your system.

Do you have a machine from where you can manually send traps?
I've got some APC UPS which I use to send those.

Is there any chance to or specify the reason or repair this problem? I can't imagine that this is a bug. Some
others would have such issues too. Without getting readable traps, OpenNMS is very impractical. Maybe I
should reinstall it.

Hi Marcel,

what is your oiperating system? Which value has the LANG environement variable (assuming *x operating system)?

Try to change the LANG and restart opennms

I deleted the relevant *.events.xml files for testing.
Now the events are unformatted events but the information is in hex again. It must be an underlying problem,
I think.

Received unformatted enterprise event (enterprise:.1.3.6.1.4.1.6876.4.3 generic:6 specific:203).

Does nobody has an idea?

Many trap contens look like this:

"0x42656e61636872696368746967756e67209620546573746d656c64756e6720"

I converted it to ascii and taadaaa! "?Benachrichtigung ? Testmeldung". Readable.

But what's the reason?

Betreff: [opennms-discuss] faulty trap content

Hello list,

I used this guide (http://www.opennms.org/wiki/Upgrade_Guide:_1.8_to_1.10) to update from 1.8 to
1.10. (Ubuntu 10.04 x86).
But OpenNMS won't start.

output.log shows:
Caused by: org.opennms.core.xml.MarshallingResourceFailureException: Failed to
marshal/unmarshal XML file while unmarshalling XML file: org.exolab.castor.xml.MarshalException:
Invalid byte 2 of 3-byte UTF-8 sequence.{File: [not available]; line: 21; column: 68}; nested exception
is org.exolab.castor.xml.MarshalException: Invalid byte 2 of 3-byte UTF-8 sequence.{File: [not
available]; line: 21; column: 68}

I found out, that my backupexec.events.xml, at line 21 column 68, contains special characters like ä or
ö. I changed them into an other notation like ae and ue and now OpenNMS starts. I used this trap definitions
with NMS 1.8, too. I've heard, that some Java components have problems with special characters (e.g. my
notifications can't handle ä, ö, ü or ß). Maybe the Java update to 1.6 is the problem? This is not a great
problem for me, but maybe there is a context to the next problem.

It's definitive more a problem.
Now I get events with content like this:
0x566572617262656974756e6720626567696e6e656e2c20756d205370656963686572706c61747a20766f6e20616267656c617566656e656e204d656469656e207a7572fc636b7a75666f726465726e2e0a

But not only my BackupExec-traps are afflicted. Also VMware traps (which are included by default) have
such content.
I found out, that only %parm[#4]% is afflicted:

VMware:
vpxdAlarmInfo trap received
vmwVpxdTargetObjType=4

Issue with auto map creation

Hello everybody,

I setup the automatic map creation regarding the wiki : http://www.opennms.org/wiki/Automatic_Map_Creation.
When my nodes are created in the database, elementType is H instead of N, why ? So they are viewable in the map.
When I changed them manually to N, it works.

elementid | mapid | elementtype | elementlabel | elementicon | elementx | elementy |  id
-----------+-------+-------------+--------------+-------------+----------+----------+------
       144 |  7623 | H           | site-a-test  | switch      |        0 |        0 | 7765
       143 |  7624 | H           | site-b-test  | switch      |        0 |        0 | 7766
      7623 |  7622 | M           | Site A       | map         |      485 |      350 | 7767
      7624 |  7622 | M           | Site B       | map         |      485 |      450 | 7768

Regards,
Samuel Mutel.

Filters for Rancid Adapter

Hi all!

I've been trying to filter wich nodes are going to be treated by the
rancid adapter...
I tried both

    <filter>IPADDR != '0.0.0.0' & (categoryName == Switches)</filter>

and

    <filter>IPADDR != '0.0.0.0' & (catincSwitches)</filter>

inside package in rancid-configuration.xml.
without luck.
So, all nodes which correspond to rancid-unmanaged Provisioning groups
trigger the following alarm:

::Rancid provisioning failed: Error: RWS PUT failed for
URL:http://x.x.x.x/rws/rancid/groups/PROVISIONING1/nodeX Status: Not
Found (404) - Resource Not Found

Which would be the right way to make a working filter based on node
categories?

Thanks!

Re: Polling "passive" nodes

Have you looked at the Passive Status Keeper and the SNMP Asset Provisioning Adapter? These two OpenNMS features might to the job for you ... maybe just the PSK alone will be enough.

With Passive Status Keeper, Passive nodes are nodes for which OpenNMS maintains the status of its interfaces and services, yet typically, is not an actual IP based service.

See: http://www.opennms.org/wiki/Passive_Status_Keeper

The SNMP Asset Provisioning Adapter “should” be able to populate the asset table for you. When installed, the adapter is invoked by provisiond (every time provisioning is run or a node is added or updated by provisiond. You can see the adapters log messages in the provisiond log file.) Your default provisioning cycle is once every 24hours but you could change this to a shorter time period (for an individual provisioning group) if required. Just note that the Adapter will start (I think the default is 3 minutes) after the provisioning cycle finishes.

See: http://www.opennms.org/wiki/SNMP_Asset_Provisioning_Adapter

Let us know how it went!

Rod

Subject: [opennms-discuss] Polling "passive" nodes

Hello list,

I am looking to monitor the status of several APs which are connected to one of many Aruba Wireless controllers. I can't communicate with the APs directly, although I can poll their status through the controller via SNMP.

I would like to have the APs configured as individuals nodes with IPs in the 169.1.x.x range and with their MAC addresses stored in one of the asset fields.

Is it possible, with the current functionality present in OpenNMS v1.10.0 to:
    1) Walk the "AP Status" tables on one or more controllers and store the results in a table (maybe database or in-memory?)

    snmpwalk -On -v2c -c <COMMUNITY> <CONTROLLER_IP> .1.3.6.1.4.1.14823.2.2.1.5.2.1.4.1.19
    .1.3.6.1.4.1.14823.2.2.1.5.2.1.4.1.19.0.254.254.254.254.1 = INTEGER: 1
    .1.3.6.1.4.1.14823.2.2.1.5.2.1.4.1.19.0.254.254.254.254.2 = INTEGER: 2
    .1.3.6.1.4.1.14823.2.2.1.5.2.1.4.1.19.0.254.254.254.254.3 = INTEGER: 1
    ...

    If the APs MAC address is present in this table and the value is set the 1, the AP is assumed to be Online.
    ( The MAC addresses in the output have been replaced with 0.254.254.254.254 )

    2) Have a service configured on each of the APs that checks if its MAC address (stored in assets) is present in the table

Thanks,
Jesse
