custom SNMP attributes

Hello.

I need to view  MACs of some devices on particular switch port in web interface of OpenNMS system. And I have script on perl which show this information in console. How I may use this script in OpenNMS ???
And other question: Is it possible to add some custom SNMP attributes (free disk space for exmple) to node page? Is it possible to have different SNMP attributes for different node types?

Thank you.

snmp alarms

I need some clarification on the statements proc, disk and load used in snmpd.conf and how to use them in opennms. I thought, please correct me if I’m wrong, that imposing limits like “proc java 2 2”, and having just one java process running, I would have had an alarm in opennms. It seems this is not the case, so I probably misunderstood the meaning of these statements, or maybe I’m using it in the wrong way. If I have to monitor, say, the number of processes running and at the same time have an alarm when this number is different from an imposed one, what should I do?

Thanks for any info, regards

Hi Luca,
You need to understand better the "proc" directive in snmpd.conf; suppose ( like your example ) you'd like to monitor a  PROC and you know that it must have ( at least ) 2 java processes running, but not more than 4. So in snmpd config you'll put this line:
proc PROC 4 2; then in order to see if it'all ok ( or not ) you need to "snmpwalk" the process-mib-tree ....:
# % snmpwalk -v 1 localhost -c public .1.3.6.1.4.1.2021.2
# enterprises.ucdavis.procTable.prEntry.prIndex.1 = 1
# enterprises.ucdavis.procTable.prEntry.prNames.1 = "PROC"
# enterprises.ucdavis.procTable.prEntry.prMin.1 = 2
# enterprises.ucdavis.procTable.prEntry.prMax.1 = 4
# enterprises.ucdavis.procTable.prEntry.prCount.1 = 1
# enterprises.ucdavis.procTable.prEntry.prErrorFlag.1 = 0
# enterprises.ucdavis.procTable.prEntry.prErrMessage.1 = ""
# enterprises.ucdavis.procTable.prEntry.prErrFix.1 = 0

If an error occur ( on PROC ), you'll see the "prErrorFlag" changing to "1" ( and an error message in "pr.Err.Message" );
If you want to monitor all these with opennms, you may set up a custom service using the SnmpPlugin ( in this case you need capsd and not provisioning ) and use all these flags to set-up polling and alarms/notifications on it.

I currently use this to monitor a lot of custom services, and beeing advised if the number of processes is lower than the number admitted ( or even if the process is not running at all ).

If you need more spec ( and detailed examples ) feel free to write me off list directly !!

Cheers,

Re: OpenNMS1.8.12 and OTRS

That's a bug in Soap:Lite

See here
https://rt.cpan.org/Public/Bug/Display.html?id=58538

Looks like it is patched in the latest version to recognise if mod_perl
is used, otherwise you can change the line
sysread( STDIN, $buffer, $length )
  to
read( STDIN, $buffer, $length )

Re: Thresholds & Alerts

Hello,

What version of OpenNMS are you using ?

It appears that you are using the deprecated Threshd instead of the in-line thresholding with Collectd.

Re: 1 minute interval RRD Definition

Kobi,

1 minute = 60 seconds (step size)

As for the RRA's that depends on how accurate you want your graphs to be
over time, and how much you're willing to let the data collection files
grow to.

I'd recommend that you read the entry "Q: How Can I Change the Size of
the RRD Files for Data Collection?" on the FAQ-Configuration page of the
OpenNMS wiki (http://www.opennms.org/wiki/FAQ-Configuration). That
entry explains what the fields are for the RRA's.
