[opennms-discuss] Error starting openNMS

Hi list,

I am getting the following error message when starting openNMS:

[root <at> dcbsl016 ~]# /etc/init.d/opennms start
Starting OpenNMS:
Started OpenNMS, but it has not finished starting up
                                                           [FAILED]

The message is not very clear and I don't know where to look for more information on what could be wrong.......openNMS seems to be working fine, but it would be nice to know what's going on.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Mario

/etc/init.d/opennms -v status

That'll spit out what's happening, if anything. It's likely that you're
only seeing a slow startup, rather than a failed one - however if any
components get stuck in "starting", look in your logfiles.

[opennms-discuss] Deleting old rows from EVENTS table

Hi list,

I am deleting old rows from the events database. I am using the following sql instruction:

DELETE FROM events WHERE NOT EXISTS (SELECT svclosteventid FROM outages WHERE svclosteventid = events.eventid UNION SELECT svcregainedeventid FROM outages WHERE svcregainedeventid = events.eventid UNION SELECT eventid FROM notifications WHERE eventid = events.eventid) AND eventtime < now() - interval '5 days';

The /var/lib/pgsql directory is 25GB in size and I am assuming that this is the largest table in the database. There are these temp files that looks like have been created after I executed the above command:

/var/lib/pgsql/data/base/17142/pgsql_tmp/pgsql_tmp3254.0
/var/lib/pgsql/data/base/17142/pgsql_tmp/pgsql_tmp3254.1
/var/lib/pgsql/data/base/17142/pgsql_tmp/pgsql_tmp3254.2
/var/lib/pgsql/data/base/17142/pgsql_tmp/pgsql_tmp3254.3
/var/lib/pgsql/data/base/17142/pgsql_tmp/pgsql_tmp3254.4

All of them have 1GB in size and there is a pgsql_tmp3254.5 growing fast as I write this email......... problem is that I am low on disk space.........can I erase these temp files? Although there is a delete statement running, the disk space is still getting smaller. Could it be because there will be a COMMIT only after the deletion process completes?

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you.

Mario

[opennms-discuss] Avability Report Question

I ran an Overall Services Availability report and am questioning exactly how the math works.

Looking at the days in the month (December) there are only a few days with 100% uptime with most being somewhere between 99.95% and 99.99%.  However, when I look at the report for the Last 12 Months Availability it shows 100.0% uptime for December.

What mathematical equation does it use to calculate The Last Months Daily Availability versus The Last 12 Months Availability?

Thanks in advance for any response.

[opennms-discuss] NSCServices

Hi all,

Can anyone push me in the right direction regarding the NSC plugin ?

Here is what i did:

In this case (not represantive but anyway) I want to monitor the Antivirus Service. The name of the service according to the registry is "Symantec Antivirus". Hence, i created a custom service in capsd-configuration.xml according to DJs docs in his blog (http://blogs.opennms.org/dj/) :

<protocol-plugin protocol="NSC-SERVICE-NAV" class-name="org.opennms.netmgt.capsd.plugins.NsclientPlugin" scan="on" user-defined="false">

     <property key="port" value="12489" />
     <property key="timeout" value="3000" />
     <property key="retry" value="2" />
     <property key="command" value="SERVICESTATE" />
     <property key="parameter" value="Symantec AntiVirus" />
</protocol-plugin>

Next I added in the poller-configuration.xml:

<service name="NSC-SERVICE-NAV" interval="300000" user-defined="true" status="on">
    <parameter key="retry" value="2"/>
    <parameter key="timeout" value="3000"/>
    <parameter key="command" value="SERVICESTATE" />
    <parameter key="parameter" value="Symantec AntiVirus" />
</service>
and
<monitor service="Symantec AntiVirus"  class-name="org.opennms.netmgt.poller.monitors.NsclientMonitor"/>

This is unfortunately not working, i.e. the Service is running, but not found by nsclient.

Here's my config:
----------------------------------------
Version:        1.2.8-1
Java Version:   1.4.2_12 Sun Microsystems Inc.
Java Virtual Machine:   1.4.2_12-b03 Sun Microsystems Inc.
Operating System:       Linux 2.6.16.21-0.8-default (i386)
Servlet Container:      Apache Tomcat/4.1.31 (Servlet Spec 2.3)
----------------------------------------

Can anyone please turn me into the right direction ? Once I figured that out I will gladly add it to the Wiki, it is very silent about this topic…..

Thanks

Christoph

Re: [opennms-discuss] NSCServices

Try this (I just tried here)

root <at> uspants1-nms01:/usr/local/OpenNMS# java -cp
lib/opennms-services-1.3.2-SNAPSHOT.jar
org.opennms.netmgt.poller.nsclient.CheckNsc host SERVICESTATE 0 0
Eventlog
NsclientPlugin: SERVICESTATE: OK (0& Eventlog: Started )
root <at> uspants1-nms01:/usr/local/OpenNMS#

This is on a Trunk so you need to verify what is in there (i.e. which JAR),
this should help you - and please add to the Wiki :)

Thanks!

[opennms-discuss] Information on Table Indexes

I am looking into collecting histogram data via OpenNMS on WaveRider
3000 series transceivers. The group definitions I put into
datacollection-config.xml for the WaveRider EUM refer to table indexes.
The only howto reference I have found on the web regarding table indexes
is "Collecting SNMP data from tables with arbitrary indexes" found at
the OpenNMS.org wiki. My questions are:

Are table indexes generic in that they use the same java classes?
(i.e. Can I rename the hrStorageIndex to myWRHistIndex and have it
work? )

Or should the underlying java classes be customized to fit the WaveRider
MIBs?

A pointer to additional information relating to tables, indexes, and how
to implement them in OpenNMS would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
