What are you using to do log rotations? If you are using logrotate, you can configure it to keep the file permissions as owned by tomcat4, which solve your problems. But that helps in our planning. It's close enough for us to sit on our
hands for 30 days... We are going to take a look at 1.3.2 in the next
day or two on our inhouse monitoring as we are using the 1.3 branch
already because of JMX... If that works for a week we'll consider using
1.3.2 as a steping stone till then in production again because of JMX.

So any ideas as to when 2.0 is maybe going to make an appearance? We
are talking about doing some changes to what and how we monitor and
would hate to spend all the time planning if for the current version
then a week later have 2.0 come out and wish we had left it alone for a
while longer.
