Re: [opennms-discuss] Log rotation

What are you using to do log rotations? If you are using logrotate,
you can configure it to keep the file permissions as owned by tomcat4,
which solve your problems.

[opennms-discuss] Microsoft Cluster Service monitoring

I'm wondering if there's any good way to monitor such services.  That's the general question.

More specifically, we have a clustered Exchange mail environment that I want to somehow try to intelligently monitor.  It essentially consistes of the virtual cluster services, a pair of virtual exchange servers, and finally 3 pieces of actual hardware (real servers).

It's a bit crazy since OpenNMS/snmp finds most (probably all) of the virtual IP's on some on one of the physical machines... Node names change/move around.. I tried to discover all three physical machines, but when something changes (virtual server moves from X to Y), the names of the nodes change/etc.

Basically, aside from the exchange/cluster/mail environment being complicated enough to figure out, monitoring it's just as difficult.

Any ideas?

[opennms-discuss] FreeNAC: Open source NAC

FreeNAC provides easy to use VLAN assignment and LAN access control for Cisco Switches and all kind of
network devices (Servers, Workstations, Printers, IP-Phones, Webcams...).

FreeNAC can be considered as having two phases.

Initially, we have taken OpenVMPS (which provides MAC based access control), added a MySQL back end, a GUI,
improved access control algorithms, scalability, redundancy, alerting etc. This tool has been
published as OpenSource on FreeNAC.net.

Next, we are testing 802.1x support by tying in FreeRadius (802.1x provides better security and is not
limited to Cisco switches) and moving the Delphi GUI to a web based user interface.

The 'plan' is for the project to move forward to eventually become THE OpenSource Enterprise tool for
dynamic VLAN assignment and LAN/WLAN authentication.

So, we wish to solicite community opinions, expertise, help and feedback. Are you interested in this tool,
would you like to use it or even like to contribute to it (documentation, support, development,
promotion, architecture, review...)?

Please visit us on www.FreeNAC.net!

We hope to have 2.0 out soon, which will replace the 1.2 series.

[opennms-discuss] Lost Regained

Hi All,

ONMS is showing an outage for a node that has already regained the service.
Looking into the eventd.log i saw a service regained event but in the
postgresql the outage has no ifregainedservice associated with it.

I've looked into the mailing archives and found nothing.

Any help?

Re: [opennms-discuss] RE : Re: screenshot

Never a vicious rumor unless the real date is in 2007 :-)

But that helps in our planning. It's close enough for us to sit on our
hands for 30 days... We are going to take a look at 1.3.2 in the next
day or two on our inhouse monitoring as we are using the 1.3 branch
already because of JMX... If that works for a week we'll consider using
1.3.2 as a steping stone till then in production again because of JMX.

Re: [opennms-discuss] HD issues with OpenNMS

It isn't so much the writing as the freezing webapp that I'm concerned about.  The hardware of my test box is a slightly tweaked Gateway E-4500S (Pentium D 915 (2.80GHz 800MHz FSB, 2x2MB cache, non-HT EM64T), 2 GB 533 Mhz Dual-Channel DDRAM, with two SATA 3MB/S drives, one solely for RRDs, the other holding Mandriva 10.2 and the postgres tables, both in ext3) while the production "server" (and I use the term loosely.) is a near-identical machine, only with a 2.8Ghz Pentium 4.  The production Gateway E-6300 is running Cricket and NMIS, and has no trouble serving the data.

We're polling all of four nodes every 60 seconds, and all of the other 125 nodes every five minutes.  Sadly, a server upgrade for monitoring purposes is not in the future, as the people I work for have a solution already, and don't really want to switch over to OpenNMS if it costs them any money to upgrade the server.

Any help would be appreciated, as would pointers to those past threads, if you happen to have them.

Thanks,
Travis

Re: [opennms-discuss] HD issues with OpenNMS

Hmmm... this sounds like the two SATA drives are effectively running off
of one controller, which you've managed to saturate. So even though
you've split the data between disks, your disk controller is the
bottleneck and is holding up your web server.

Is there a way for you to get the second disk moved to a separate
controller?

Does Cricket and NMIS keep the same number of RRD graphs as OpenNMS?

[opennms-discuss] parseMib

I’ve got a few mibs that I would like to import into ONMS.  However I’m having difficulty with parseMib.  As I understand the syntax is parseMib.sh MIB1 [MIB2] and it writes to stdout the information for the xml files in onms.

Here is the output from the command I’m currently getting.  I have moved the mib files into this directory.

# cd $OPENNMS_HOME/contrib/mibparser/dist

# ./parseMib.sh

    Missing arguments...

    Usage: parseMib.sh <MIB File 1> [<MIB file 2>...]

    Example: parseMib.sh RFC-1213.my

# ./parseMib.sh WTCS.MIB INFORMANT-ADV.MIB

    Looking for a good java...

    Using java in user's path...

    Checking Java version for 1.4+...

    Version is: java version "1.5.0_06"

Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_06-b05)

Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 1.5.0_06-b05, mixed mode)

Your help is greatly appreciated!
