[opennic-discuss] Help?

This is a reiterance of my forum post:

I am not technical, I'm curious.

When following the instructions from the "Start Here" link to set up on Vista, I have questions.

"...in the "Connection Properties" dialog that appeared, you will need to scroll down and highlight the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)..."

Fair enough. But I have two options - TCP/IPv4 and TCP/IPv6. Which one should I use?

And what numbers should I use in the Preferred DNS server and the Alternate DNS server fields? I now one must come from the list of OpenNIC Public DNS Servers...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: [opennic-discuss] Help?

Currently the guides are being updated, try and use the Windows 7 Version (http://www.opennicproject.org/start-here/51-migrate-to-opennic/83-windows-7) it should be very similar to Vista. This one should answer your questions if not just flick another email to us.

And what keeps me from registering multiple times?

Is this expected to scale in case OpenNIC hits the bigtime?

Are you familiar with the ICANN experiment of At-Large representation,
and the reasons for its failure?

Re: [opennic-discuss] Help?

In short,  both!  Set up IPv4 to go with a ipv4 address,  then put an ipv6 dns address in for ipv6.

Re: [opennic-discuss] Voter registration?

Pete--

Voting is done on the www.opennicproject.org site. Basically, anyone
who participates in some aspect of OpenNIC (mailing list, operator,
forums, etc.) is considered a "voting" member. We don't have any
strict membership policies. If you participate, you have a vote.

There's really nothing that prevents a determined individual to stuff
the poll. Duplicate votes from the same IP aren't permitted, but we
all know that's easily circumvented.

As OpenNIC continues to grow, we will probably have to revisit the
voting process.

[opennic-discuss] New to the list

Hi:

I am new to the list. How can I get access to the archives?

When I go to: http://lists.darkdna.net/pipermail/discuss/

I am greeted with the message: You don't have permission to access
/pipermail/discuss/ on this server.

Nothing.

> Is this expected to scale in case OpenNIC hits the bigtime?

Probably not. The proverbial chicken-and-egg problem: The voting
system works fine as is, but it would take resources to actually
implement a strictly controlled voting mechanism, and would require
some sort of official membership status. Said resources wouldn't be
made available (or feasible) except with a larger membership base.
Rinse and repeat.

The reason for its failure is that the ICANN board resented the idea
of an "outsider" (Karl Auerbach comes to mind here) who would actually
report the inner workings of ICANN to the world. Or at least that's
how I remember it.
