Bug or feature: read-only files have AppleDouble part read/write

Recently I've turned on options:upriv on the volumes of my Netatalk
file server. I've noticed two issues which I don't understand:

(1) Suppose you create a file named "changeme" with mode 0644 (default
on Mac OS X) on an AFP volume on the Mac OS X side. On the Netatalk
side of the volume, the mode of "changeme" is set to 0644, too. But
".AppleDouble/changeme" is set to 0666, i.e., anybody with for example
shell access to the file server can modify the contents of
".AppleDouble/changeme".

(2) Setting execute bits on files seems to be ignored by the Netatalk
server.

Is this the intended behavior? According to the AFP3.1 specs? Are these
bugs or features of Netatalk? I couldn't find anything useful in the
AFP or Netatalk documentation.

Best regards, Burkhard.

DB_SECONDARY_BAD

Greetings,

I had a somewhat massive failure of a RAID5 drive system. Not sure
what happened since it is also ext3 journaled, but I had to run a 2
hour fsck on it to fix some problems. Everything is fine, except the
.AppleDB. I keep getting errors like these all over the directory tree
(about 600GB worth of data, yes GB):

cnid_lookup: Unable to get CNID did 0x1de4a, name Clerk:
DB_SECONDARY_BAD: Secondary index inconsistent with primary
cnid_update: Unable to delete CNID 2101151: DB_SECONDARY_BAD: Secondary
index inconsistent with primary
cnid_update: (1) Unable to update CNID 2101151:Clerk: Invalid argument
cnid_lookup: Unable to get CNID did 0x1de4a, name Clerk:
DB_SECONDARY_BAD: Secondary index inconsistent with primary
cnid_update: Unable to delete CNID 2101152: DB_SECONDARY_BAD: Secondary
index inconsistent with primary
cnid_update: (1) Unable to update CNID 2101152:Clerk: Invalid argument
cnid_lookup: Unable to get CNID did 0x1de4a, name Clerk:
DB_SECONDARY_BAD: Secondary index inconsistent with primary
cnid_update: Unable to delete CNID 2101153: DB_SECONDARY_BAD: Secondary
index inconsistent with primary

Every night I get thousands of these entries. I have tried the
db_verify, db_recover etc tools. They fixed a few things and say
everything is fine. I even dumped out the cnid2.db file and
re-imported it. Still not working. Any way to just rebuild this
database from scratch, or do I just delete it and hope for the best?

netatalk 2.0.2 alias (link) files

Hi,

I'm having a problem copying a type of alias file from a Linux server running netatalk-2.0.2 to a Mac OSX 10.3 client. This alias file contains a link to another file which in turn contains a link to another file.

Steps to reproduce:

1- Copy an application (in my test case Adobe Illustrator CS) from an OSX 10.3 client to a Linux server running netatalk-2.0.2.

2- Copy the application back to the OSX 10.3 client.

When I try to copy the application back to the desktop I get an error message "This alias AdobeSplashKit cannot be copied to the destination, perhaps because the destination does not support this type of alias".

In my test case, trying to copy "Adobe Illustrator CS/Contents/Frameworks/AdobeSplashKit.framework/AdobeSplashKit" directly will cause the problem.

If you have any insights into this problem they will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Problems Mounting File Share

This problem was posted to netatalk-admin with no response, so I thought I
would try here.

I had to rebuild a Debian system have not gotten Netatalk working again.
Originally I could not get afpd running. Once Didier pointed out a
problem with my nsswitch.conf I afpd start up and I thought everything was
working. It turns out that I never have gotten afpd completely working
again, users just started mounting the Samba share when then encounter
problems. Finally some of my OS9 users are complaining about not being
able to get at their files.

What I am currently seeing is that I can connect and authenticate to the
afpd server, but the client system Finder hangs at that point and never
displays the list of shares on the server. If I stop and restart Netatalk
services on the Debian host the client Finder will return with the list of
shares, but of course with the afpd down connections fail if you select one
of the services.

I would really appreciate a pointer to tell me what I should be looking at.
This is a Debian system on a Alpha with a 2.4.28 kernel. Netatalk is
version 2.0.2.

Thanks in advance,

Bill

P.S. I would love to be able to test this remotely. I test Samba remotely
using smbclient. Is there any suggestion for something similar for
netatalk testing?

If you can capture the traffic between the server and the Mac. It looks
like a DB issue. Did you try to delete the DB?

There's no such thing as smbclient for tcp in the test suite you have
afp_ls.
At http://is.im.mri.co.jp/afpclient/ there's an afpclient for ddp.

I did try creating a new shared area. But then again I tried a lot of
things and I can't say I did it correctly at this point. I will try again
with a packet sniffer attached and let you know what I see. This will take
me a day or two.

Thank's I give it a try a bit later to day.

distrib/rpm/netatalk-redhat.spec is out of date

This file in particular seems pretty out of date. In fact,
browsing cvs - it's over 2 years old.

Any objections to getting it updated?
Do you want me to send a patch, become a netatalk
developer, or ?

c sources in headers?

Ummm... not sure about this, but should c source files be
included in the pkginclude_HEADERS in sys/netatalk/Makefile.in?
It seems to me there should perhaps be something in the SOURCES
token. Anyone?

I vote for it! It's interesting that RHEL no longer ships netatalk. I would definitely use it!
