beggarly places, covered with heath and rushes, ten times as barren as
Sherril Heath.' 'But,' said he, 'how could that little boy's father feed
_his flocks_ there, then?' I was ready to tumble off the horse with
laughing. 284. I do not know any thing much more distressing to the
spectators than exhibitions of this sort. Every one feels, not for the
child, for it is insensible to the uneasiness it excites, but for the
parents, whose amiable fondness displays itself in this ridiculous
manner. Upon these occasions, no one knows what to say, or whither to
direct his looks. The parents, and especially the fond mother, looks
sharply round for the so-evidently merited applause, as an actor of the
name of MUNDEN, whom I recollect thirty years ago, used, when he had
treated us to a witty shrug of his shoulders, or twist of his chin, to
turn his face up to the gallery for the clap. If I had to declare on my
oath which have been the most disagreeable moments of my life, I verily
believe, that, after due consideration, I should fix upon those, in
which parents, whom I have respected, have made me endure exhibitions
like these; for, this is your choice, to be _insincere_, or to _give
offence_. 285. And, as towards the child, it is to be _unjust_, thus to
teach it to set a high value on trifling, not to say mischievous,
attainments; to make it, whether it be in its natural disposition or
not, vain and conceited. The plaudits which it receives, in such cases,
puffs it up in its own thoughts, sends it out into the world stuffed
with pride and insolence, which must and will be extracted out of it by
one means or another; and

N that of 1830. Perhaps there would have been little to regret in this,
had it not been, that, instead of devoting their talents to the
establishing of a stable republican government, several distinguished
Frenchmen, whom we never can think capable of believing the nonsense
they uttered, began to labor to bring about a sort of social Arcadia, in
which all men were to be made happy, and which was to be based on
contempt for political economy and defiance of common sense. Property,
with its usual sensitiveness, took the alarm, and the Parisians soon had
one another by the throat. How well founded was this alarm, it would be
difficult to say. Most likely it was grossly exaggerated, and had no
facts of importance to go upon. That among the disciples of M. Louis
Blanc there were gentlemen who had no respect for other men's property,
because they had no property of their own, it is quite safe to believe;
but that they had any fixed ideas about seizing property, or of
providing labor at high wages for workmen, it would be impossible to
believe, even if Albert, _ouvrier_, that most mythical of
revolutionists, were to make solemn affidavit of it on the works of
Aurora Dudevant. Some vague ideas about relieving the wants of the poor,
Louis Blanc and his associates had, just as all men have them who have
heads to see and hearts to feel the existence of social evils. Had they
obtained possession of the French government, immediately after Louis
Philippe, to use his own words, had played the part of Charles X., they
would have failed utterly, as Lamartin

Wer is, it is the occasion of great stumbling to those who reject infant
baptism, and are confirmed in rejecting it, by misapprehending the views
and feelings of many who use the term in an objectionable sense. The
discussion now became animated. Mr. S. said that he had a further
objection. It leads many, who use it erroneously, into perplexing and
fruitless positions. Assuming that the children are members of the
church, they discuss the question, as the sermon has stated, Of what
church are they members? Some reply, Of the church to which their
parents belong. Others say nay, but of the church universal. Then they
feel it incumbent upon them to provide some means of discipline for
these so-called members. In case they grow up, and neglect to come with
their parents to the Lord's Supper, must they not be disci

Er than usual this morning," said Paddy. "Don't you want to sit up in
this tree while I cut it down?" Sammy grew black in the face with anger,
for he knew that Paddy was laughing at him. You remember how only a few
days before he had been so intent on calling Paddy bad names that he
actually hadn't noticed that Paddy was cutting the very tree in which he
was sitting, and so when it fell he had had a terrible fright. "You
think you are very smart, Mr. Beaver, but you'll think differently one
of these fine days!" screamed Sammy. "If you knew what I know, you
wouldn't be so well satisfied with yourself." "What do you know?" asked
Paddy, pretending to be very much alarmed. "I'm not going to tell you
what I know," retorted Sammy Jay. "You'll find out soon enough. And when
you do find out, you'll never steal another tree from our Green Forest.
Somebody is going to catch you, and it isn't Farmer Brown's boy either!"
Paddy pretended to be terribly frightened. "Oh, who is it? Please tell
me, Mr. Jay," he begged. Now to be called Mr. Jay made Sammy feel very
important. Nearly everybody else called him Sammy. He swelled himself
out trying to look as important as he felt, and his eyes snapped with
pleasure. He was actually making Paddy the Beaver afraid. At least he
thought he was. "No, Sir, I won't tell you," he replied. "I wouldn't be
you for a great deal though! Somebody who is smarter than you are is
going to catch you, and when he gets through with you, there won't be
anything left but a few bones. No, Sir, nothing but a few bones!" "Oh,
Mr. Jay, this is terrible news! Whatever am I to do?" cried Paddy, all
the time keeping right on at work cutting another tree. "There's nothing
