OverbiteFF 1.1.1420 released

OverbiteFF 1.1 build 1420 has been released -- happy new year!

This version has a couple of minor display niggles fixed, along with "dotless"
support to suppress the terminal period that appears to trip up the Mozilla
XML parser. This means SVGs will now display properly in this version.

This is the final version to support Firefox 2 (although if a critical
security hole is found in the near future, I may still release an emergency
patch-up, but I will definitely be taking the hacks for Mozilla 1.8 out for
version 1.2).

Also, if anyone wants to put up any more reviews on the Mozilla Add-on site

	https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7685

it would be appreciated (looks like we had a dope reviewer spoil the soup).
I'm not sure why it hasn't been approved yet; it's been a number of months.

I should finally mention that I have removed OverbiteCa for Camino from the
roadmap; there are some sizeable roadblocks to getting it running in 1.6.
There might be hope for Camino 2.0 but it's very low on my priority list now
(I plan to actually start working on not only OverbiteFF with extra added
tasty XUL, but also now that there is a somewhat functional Linux AIR, I'm
also getting some design together for the Overbite AIR version).

Stay tuned for bucktooth 0.2.6 this weekend.

Bucktooth 0.2.6

Continuing my lack of a social life, Bucktooth 0.2.6 is now out. This version
adds executable extension support for filesystems with wonky execute bits
(Cygwin, I'm looking at *you*), fixes a really stupid bug that is worthy of
Zune 2K, and has a few custodial improvements. Share and enjoy.

New Updates on Hal3000

Looks like the Archive on Hal3000 has been updated with new software and reference articles.  gopher://hal3000.cx/1/Begin_Here

It appears, for example, that there are now several choices for Windows Gopher Clients and Servers, rather
than the single choice we had before.  Still looks like no one is submitting test reviews yet though.

UI suggestions for Overbite 1.2

So, I'm starting to gather thoughts for Overbite 1.2. This will, as I
mentioned before, be Firefox 3 only. Get your wish list requests in now.

While I'm pontificating, I'd like to hear from the group on a few things
I'm mulling over:

- Jacob Head asked for a "View Gopher Source" which I will add (it will
display the raw menu data rather than the HTMLified version you get in
Overbite now, which you can still get with the regular view source). Are
there any other ways of viewing a gopher menu people are interested in?

- More skins, at least one or two. Still soliciting people's interfaces if
they have worked on any.

- The U-turn icon will be turned into an XUL overlay so that you can use the
button from any document, not just a menu. Where is the best place to put
it? The address bar?

- I've considered integrating the search dialogue (using DHTML) into the
page rather than using a drop-down requester, so when you click on the link
for a search engine or a CSO, a form drops down and the focus shifts to the
box. To cancel, you just click Cancel and the box rolls back up and
disappears. This also allows the form to be skinned, which is another
advantage, and is not modal. Which do people like better?

That's certainly doable. I might not do it for 1.2 per se, but Gopher+
is on my list.

Re: UI suggestions for Overbite 1.2

MS Internet Explorer was able to use gopher+ all details request
(directory_selector<tab>$) to get all details and display date of
modification and file size for each item. Since Overbite already
handles this kind of menus perhaps it wouldn't be to difficult to use
the information in such menus if available. If not in 1.2 perhaps in
some future version?

Re: UI suggestions for Overbite 1.2

That's nice to hear. How far do you plan to take Gopher+ support? What
is actually worth supporting? I could only find one server that
supports (workable) ASK forms and only one server that supports
multi-view (both on iubio.bio.indiana.edu Are there more? I would be
specially interested in servers with ASK forms :-) ) Still I think
full support for Gopher+ is nice to have so in my client I will add
it.

I think multi-view is the most useful part. Ironically, it would probably
not be hard to turn ASK forms into HTML forms; they're really not in the
slightest dissimilar.

Fwd: gopher and IPv6

Hiho gopher folks,

after some tries to enable public access to my home gopher reliably (read:
without NAT and other evil stuff), i'd like to set up an IPv6 gopher. But: i
haven't yet managed to have any gopher daemon bind to an IPv6 port yet.
What i tried so far is: GoFish and pygopherd.
Anyone did this before? Or is there a gopher server that runs from xinetd?
Have until now only tried standalone servers (the two named above).

Oh and BTW: anyone run across a Veronica and/or a HOWTO on maintaining it?

Greets,
Florian
