-------------------

Hello moderator, I know that this mailing list is intended primarily for developers, in my case I´m studing Electronical Engeneering in Universidad Simon Bolivar at Venezuela. For my thesis I have to create a homemade software that can capture traffic of VoIP among PC´s, after that I have to calculate some parameters of Quality of Service. I am aware Ethereal does all of these, and I know that Ethereal has free access to the codes, I downloaded " wireshark-0.99.2.tar".  I have to develop my software in JAVA, I noticed that the codes are there but they are written in C. I´m not too good programming, I was assigned to this area for my thesis of fifth year, but clearly is not my specialty, therefore my project seems imposible for me, but I have faith you can help me with the codes in Java, the program I have to develop is simple and is only for academic porpuses, therefore I`m positive someone would be able to help me... please!!... I only need the codes for those specific functions...

Thanks for your time and future help!  :0)

Sincerely yours,

Andreina Toro

PD: if I´m able to finish my thesis on time with your help, your invited to Caracas to my graduation on march!... :0)

Design documentation

Hi list,

Rather quiet here, so I thought I'll pop the question:
Any leads to solid design information on Ethereal?
I've seen some attempts, but nothing more than some headings and a lot of
"To be filled in...."

Thanx,
Jaap

Fwd: About the HP-UX docs (README.hpux in the source distribution)

Hello,

I've been trying to get Ethereal to work on HP-UX 11i and have found
the instructions in the README.hpux a bit confusing. The file quotes
from various posts off google groups, without trying to summarize the
information, in a way that you know exactly for each HP-UX version
what needs to be done. For example, it's not apparent from the file
whether the

echo 'lanc_outbound_promisc_flag/W1' | /usr/bin/adb -w /stand/vmunix /dev/kmem

is needed on HP-UX 11i/11.00 or not. When I tried to run the command
on 11i it failed, and by asking on the ITRC
forums I found out that it wasn't actually needed for that release (the README
only states you don't need any patches in order to capture packets on
11i). The only problem I've seen on 11i is that if you have another
app that uses DLPI to put an interface in promiscuous mode, you won't
be able to use Ethereal.

Maybe we can organize the info systematically, and then provide the
google groups links at the end of the README.

As far as I understand:

1) for HP-UX 11i, you don't need any patches to enable the use of
Ethereal; however, if you have another app using promiscuous mode on
the same interface, you will get the following error when running
either Ethereal or tcpdump:

recv_ack: promisc_phys: UNIX error - Device busy

User's Guides beyond 0.8.19

The ETHEREAL USER'S GUIDE at "http://www.ethereal.com/docs/user-guide/" says
that it is for ETHEREAL version 0.8.19. I have seen various references to
updated versions of the GUIDE for newer versions of ETHEREAL. Why do there seem
to be newer versions of the GUIDE floating around, but the "official" guide
remains stuck at ETHEREAL version 0.8.19?

References to newer versions:

http://www.ethereal.com/docs/syngress-book/284_EPS_02.pdf:
"Another great source of information is the Ethereal User s Guide, by Richard
Sharpe, located at www.ethereal.com/docs/user-guide. It is a bit outdated, based
on version 0.9.7, but it still contains some great information."

http://www.ethereal.com/lists/ethereal-users/200211/msg00223.html:
"See Ethereal User's Guide: V1.1 for ethereal 0.9.7..."

http://kiz.uni-ulm.de/staff/software/doku/free_unix/ethereal/user-guide/:
