It's just the standard samba so I can't see the big deal about testing.

A suggestion though is to stop samba manually before upgrading the rpms.

This is true, but including SWAT certainly doesn't hurt anything.
Unless one is very familar with Samba, SWAT is not easy to get at. In
any event, standard Redhat build of Samba includes SWAT. I thought that
Mitel liked to use stock redhat unless there was a very good reason not
to???

Agreed. I attempted to build Samba 2.2.3 when it came out, with no
success. When I asked Mitel what they did, they told me to build the
RPMs on a Redhat box, which I did. Problem is, SME isn't stock RedHat.
  The RPMS built and installed fine on my Redhat box, but wouldn't on my
SME machine as it uses an older kernel. This means that you have to
install all of the supporting RPMs on your SME machine and build there.
    As Darnell pointed out, this is not a trivial undertaking...

I memory servers, when I asked Charlie what they did to build the RPMs,
he simply built them and posted on the Mitel site.

Sure, I understand Charlie. Was just mentioning it is all. IMO, Samba
is one of those apps that I like to keep on top of. Unlike most Linux
software, Samba is tied directly to what MS puts out. It's not uncommon
for subtle changes to creep into Windows Service Packs or Windows apps
that throws a "munkey wrench" in things.

Mitel does not include samba-swat on their iso builds. Charlie made it
available for 'testing' only and posted in his contrib area. I mirrored
Charlie's contribs on my site. Otherwise you won't find samba-swat and
Mitel together anywhere else.

I'm curious to know why you are suggesting that. What do you think it will
help?

SME/samba development HowTo

If anyone is interested, these are the required rpms I've found necessary to
add to an SME server to do development in general and specific for samba.
Note there are some 5.1.2/5.5 release differences.

[DEV-TOOLS]
-----------
cpp-2.96-85.i386.rpm
gcc-2.96-85.i386.rpm
gcc-c++-2.96-85.i386.rpm
glibc-devel-2.2.4-19.i386.rpm
kernel-headers-2.2.19-7.0.8.i386.rpm
kernel-source-2.2.19-7.0.8.i386.rpm
libstdc++-devel-2.96-85.i386.rpm
make-3.79.1-5.i386.rpm

[SAMBA-DEV-TOOLS]
-----------------
autoconf-2.13-14.noarch.rpm
automake-1.4p5-2.noarch.rpm
libacl-2.0.11-1.i386.rpm
libacl-devel-2.0.11-1.i386.rpm
libattr-2.0.8-2.i386.rpm
5.1.2 = libtool-1.3.5-8.i386.rpm
5.5 = libtool-1.4-8.i386.rpm
m4-1.4.1-5.i386.rpm
ncurses-devel-5.2-12.i386.rpm
5.1.2 = pam-devel-0.75-16.i386.rpm
5.5 = pam-devel-0.75-19.i386.rpm
5.1.2 = readline-devel-4.1-9.i386.rpm

Yes, but we don't use *all* of RedHat's RPMs.

Your assertion about SWAT is not correct. Installing swat is harmless, but
using it is not. Swat is incompatible with the e-smith/SME templated
configuration system, just as are linuxconf, webmin, comanche, etc. Any
configuration changes made using swat will be lost the next time a
user/group/print/i-bay is modified.

Re: samba 2.2.5-4 update

Which is incorrect: Including it or finding it? I agree that using it
is a big no-no on an SME system, but including it certainly doesn't hurt
anything. Without a GUI on the server itself, it is very very difficult
to access SWAT remotely. Exclude the TCP-wrappers that point to SWAT
and it's next to impossible to access it from anywhere.
