Re: Log file analyzing

Wow, thanks for all the input!

I've made a new version available that should solve your requests.
Configuration and installation have been given some attention, so it
should be a piece of cake to install the package and get it up and running
now.

It doesn't do that for good reason: Delegation cancels the wildcard
defaults because if it didn't, the defaults would somehow have to be
passed to the subzone, perhaps on another nameserver. This would
quickly add up to a lot of data to be passed.

DNS shouldn't do that because it isn't a relational database. Some
people mistakenly think it is, even after being told many times by many
smart people that it isn't.

dnscache problem

Hi I'm using djbdns on gentoo and I'm having some problems.
My dns dosn't resolve names after some requests and the only solution to make it work again is to restart svscan.

Could you help me please

It sounds like there is a problem with logging. The various programs
(tinydns, dnscache, etc) log to a pipe which is read by multilog. If
multilog is not running, this pipe fills up and the dns server blocks.

Are you sure multilog is running? What is the result of running this
command?

svstat /service/dnscache/log /service/tinydns/log

Do you see anything in your logs?

Andrea, you should respond to the list and not me personally. There are
others here who could have answered you after you sent this reply, and
I'm not your personal support representative! :)

As you can see, both services have only been running for one second.
This indicates that they probably keep stopping. Try to run "ps axwww"
to see if you spot any error messages on the readproctitle line. You can
also try to stop the services:

svc -d /service/dnscache/log /service/tinydns/log

and as root, try to run the services manually:

/service/dnscache/log/run
/service/tinydns/log/run

and you might see some indicative error messages.

Damn it, I replied to Ketil instead of the list. Sorry.

repeat:

Gentoo's version of daemontools starts svscan as an init task (ie.
/etc/init.d/svscan instead of inittab) and it starts svscan directly
instead of using svscanboot (which is where readproctitle is normally
started).

So, good luck troubleshooting daemontools problems under gentoo without
readproctitle unless you edit the init script and replace
/usr/bin/svscan with /usr/bin/svscanboot.

Hard time to connect a german domain (denic)

Hello,

I have a hard time to register a new german domain. I allways get the
answer from the denic-robot, that my configuration is wrong.

I try to connect this domain: halle-7.de <http://halle-7.de>
tinydns is correctly running, I use it since years for a few domains
(german domains too) without a problem. I connected recently a few news
eu-domains without a problem. But thistime, german domains make real
problems and i can't figure it out

My configuration is this:

#
# halle-7.de <http://halle-7.de>
#
#define the authoritative nameserver
.halle-7.de::ns1.halle-7.de
.halle-7.de::ns2.halle-7.de

#IP for machine1,2,3,4,5
=www1.halle-7.de:213 <http://www1.halle-7.de:213>.239.206.214
=www2.halle-7.de:213 <http://www2.halle-7.de:213>.239.215.180

+mail.halle-7.de:213 <http://7.de:213>.239.206.214

And this is the answer from the denic:

The domain

       halle-7.de <http://halle-7.de/>

has NOT been updated.
The following errors were detected:

I guess denic does not believe your glue records and cannot find

halle-7.de.             259200  IN      NS      ns1.halle-7.de.
halle-7.de.             259200  IN      NS      ns2.halle-7.de.

Maybe you can temporaryly offer then two names they can find in DNS today

host_look("213.239.215.180","213.239.215.180","3589265332").
host_name("213.239.215.180","213-239-215-180.clients.your-server.de").

host_look("213.239.206.214","213.239.206.214","3589263062").
host_name("213.239.206.214","213-239-206-214.clients.your-server.de").

After the robot has accepted your data you can revert to the
names you like. Now it will find them.

Cheers
Peter and Karin

I added the two lines, but DENIC does not accept it.

My tinydns-data looks like this:
# Hetzner 5 = 213.239.206.214
# Hetzner 6 = 213.239.215.180
#
# halle-7.de

.halle-7.de::213-239-206-214.clients.your-server.de

The DENIC-Answer:

Re: Hard time to connect a german domain (denic)

you have

#define the authoritative nameserver
.halle-7.de::ns1.halle-7.de
.halle-7.de::ns2.halle-7.de

now add

.halle-7.de::213-239-215-180.clients.your-server.de
.halle-7.de::213-239-206-214.clients.your-server.de

That is just another name for your existing nameservers.
Later when DENIC has accepted your domain you can try
to delete the two lines again. DENIC should find
ns1.halle-7.de and ns2.halle-7.de now because they are
in DNS.
