Graphing question

Howdy,

I've used mrtg way back when (10Y+ ago) and I'm looking for a graphing
solution for my house power and solar panels.
This would be on linux.

The absolutely perfect solution would be the equivalent of the graph here
http://www.google.com/finance?q=goog

Things I need:
1) being able to see last month's data
2) or last week or two days ago
3) pulling two graphs with identical resolution to compare 2 months
(but I can do that with 2 browsers)

Most mrtg solutions don't let you go back in the past and most mrtg
solutions delete data resolution in the past. I know that mrtg can be
configured not to drop data (never mind that if you allocate 30 years, it
could pre-allocate hundreds of megs of space).
Does cacti allow graphing random time periods in the past like the google
finance example above?

Thing that would be awesome:
4) a graph like the google one that I can just drag in the past or future
and change scale just with the mouse

Given what I'm trying to do, would you say cacti is the right solution for
me or would you recommend another piece of software like Nisca or some
other?

Re: Graphing question

As I'm a cacti guy, I recommend it, for sure.
And yes, you are not the first trying to solve such a business.
http://docs.cacti.net will help you getting the basic idea and the strength of
cacti.
To be honest, it works best were lots of devices and graphs are involved.
But there are loads of templates out there in the http://forums.cacti.net that
you might feel worth looking at

Hello Marc,

Welcome to the list - I'd say that if you had experience with MRTG then you will be more than happy with Cacti
and RRDTool,

With regards your queries:

>This would be on linux.

Not a problem - there's even a great package called CactiEZ that installs a LAMP and sets Cacti up straight
from boot which is great to get up and running straight away - can be either windows or Linux

>The absolutely perfect solution would be the equivalent of the graph here >>http://www.google.com/finance?q=goog

That's a great hover feature on the graph - Cacti has zoom functionality to drag and drop into a period -
there's always folks creating plugins so worth taking a look at the forum on www.cacti.net

>Things I need:
>1) being able to see last month's data

Not a problem - MRTG used to store in a flat file, RRDTool writes the data to a mysql database and uses round
robin to store much more detailed historical stats

>2) or last week or two days ago

You can setup Cacti to store 5 minute data for quite a while - we use it for ISP billing and store a months worth
of 5 minute data which gives great detail when you want to rewind the clock and go back to a certain time in
good detail - you can even set it to 1 minute data average depending on the amount of kit (a full poll of all
devices needs to be done in under 1 min - on our busiest server 500+ devices takes 80 seconds!)

Re: Graphing question

Clarification:

>As above - by default I think it's a week - and can be adjusted to how you like

I meant 5 minute data values ;) - 2 years historical data + with Cacti/RRDTool

First, apologies for the spam/bounce messages you likely got, you can blame
the forced reply-to in the list that tends to remove the Cc in replies.

Right, I did have a look but didn't find sample graphs to play with and see
the live interface.

Re: Plugin for Sybase

Please see http://docs.cacti.net to create own templates. Search the Forums for
keyword sybase to find those that may have already been published

Re: Plugin for Sybase

Mintoy,

I suggest you look at the mysql graph templates as guidance. The most complicated issue is determining what
is important to graph, and how to obtain it.

Since php is very rich in SQL support, you can simply connect to sybase and get what you need from it. if you use
the script server, you can get all the data at once and then store it in a global variable for subsequent
graphs calls.
