Re: Still searching for a better Solution

Okay........Just 1 last thought..The key word for BNR2 is "singular",,,,,"1"......."uno"

Msglst file  < 1 gig  -  the real key for using BNR2
Use 1 server at a time to download headers
Use 1 database for large binary groups so your Msglst file doesn't grow beyond 1 gig

BTW you can use more than 1 database at a time ie 1 database for each newsgroup :)  however BNR3 would
possibly be more useful if you want to use multiple binary groups downloading large amounts of headers.

All in all BNR2 is outdated because of the lack of support for updating the programme. But in it's day it was
really a great performer and I would love to see someone enhance it just 1 more time :)

John
BTW I am only a small downloader....40 - 60 gigs per month and BNR2 didn't miss a beat most months :)

Then make the window larger ???

This has been something that 'windows' has been able to do for quite some
time. Do you know how to do this ? There are little lines at the point
between each part (that you select from the options), you can have each as
wide as you want and the window will ...scroll along.

Do you even have the file name (title) bar selected ?

As I have said for so many years there is no other usenet down loader that
can do as much as BNR, but you do have to look at the options sometime.

NP, but you keep posting to this group AND the spam group i.e.
gmane.network.bnr,gmane.spam.detected I just saw this (and your other
post) because I was working on my score file (and so had it off) which
auto kill all post to the spam group.

No size limit with BNR3, I used to get all the headers in the big groups,
but there is not any real need to do this anymore, but if you feel the
need to it can do so, but as said .nzb files negate the need to pull (in
my case) >5 days.

Re: Re: BNR2 - Queue column upgrade ??

Thanks Lenny

Yes I think that I know what you are saying.....but my 22" screen is still not large enough to take in the
complete line so that I can see whether the line is an rar file or a par file. The window is fixed in BNR -  ie
you go so far and it will skip to the next part.

However, when using altbinz there is a scroll bar at the bottom which allows me to scroll to the right and open
the part that much wider and wider. I really don't think that BNR is able to do this.

Wish posting to the usenet had the standard of entering the parts at the beginning instead of the end :) but
who would have thought that people wanted to write a story in the subject line???

I really enjoyed BNR1 and have enjoyed the gift of BNR2 as it just was such a great program to use. Still
is....But :)  wish someone skilled enough would take it to the next level.

Using nzb files Altbinz is beginning to be the better of the 2 programmes..1 con is that Altbinz is not as
flexible as BNR2 with the number of connections you want to use.

Questions concerning BNR3

I went to bnr's website and downloaded BNR3beta0.14.7, However
when I tried to launch the program it would not load because the
QTINTF.DLL was missing. so I thought well I will just copy the same
file from bnr2. Well it worked or it is at least coming up. But it is a
major resource hog.Maybe I am doing something wrong. But by all
indications from the pdf manuals 2&3 operate the same. I can set it up
for the servers and download the newsgroup list but when I try to
refresh and get the headers for the group I pick it is
so.....s...l...o...w. Then it usually
causes my whole computer to crash. Just a little computer background.
2002 Compaq Presario, AMD XP 1600+ 1.40 ghz, 0 hd 40gb 5400 rpm and
drive 1 80gb 7400 rpm.and external 320gb ysb drive. I need some advice

I guess it might be the unfortunate default database settings...

Put this set of commands into a batch file and run it in the BNR
DB folder. It will set the DB parameters to values which have
positive impact on performance.

sqlite msgdb.bnr "pragma default_temp_store=memory;"
sqlite msgdb.bnr "pragma default_cache_size=200000;"
sqlite msgdb.bnr "pragma default_synchronous=off;"
sqlite grpdb.bnr "pragma default_temp_store=memory;"
sqlite grpdb.bnr "pragma default_cache_size=100000;"
sqlite grpdb.bnr "pragma default_synchronous=off;"

You can play with the cache_size values, make them smaller if you
think BNR eats too much memory.
