Hmmm... changing the fonts for KDE did the trick when it happened to me,
even though I wasn't running KDE back then. Make sure you're using KDE's
font configuration tool and not something provided by your distribution.
If it's a fallback problem, you'll have to correct that with qtconfig
(obvious, isn't it ? LOL). You might also have to restart BNR for
changes to take effect.

If you're running (or have been running) Gnome programs, check your
settings in Gnome too... running GConfd with KDE has some strange
effects on font settings and BNR seems to use Gnome's fonts in that case.

Have you tried BNR Options > Appearance > different Style/Theme settings. At
my Kubuntu(5.10)/KDE3.5.1 Theme=Luna makes letters "pushed together". With
Style=Motif everything works fine.

Re: Re: Putting together the pieces / resolution post

I have heard this from many people, I have not seen
this on win2k, but
most of the time the problem seems to be that people
dont let BNR finish
the job.

What I mean is I never see anyone say they have
rar00.01, rar00.02,
rar00.03 and so on, as in this case BNR would not have
joined the files,
they always seem to have either, all 01 files, because
they dont
understand the way BNR downloads the first part...
first, or (often because of people posting with multi
threads) lots of parts that are not consecutive and as
such cant be joined yet because of the missing parts
between, and they are not used to seeing this because
it is often done in a temp directory by other down
loaders.

L.

When it happened to me I had complete downloads but
they weren't joined together. I had to use Brawney
lads to do this. The latest version does not work on
Win98 and there should be a warning to this effect
when downloading it for the 1st time. The real
interesting part is that it happening to seasoned
BNReaper users.

I can assure you that I'm well experienced with BNR2 and when I saw it
happen I let BNR2 run to completion. I marked 1 32 part rar file for
download, fully expecting that the computer's owner had done something
strange or the files that had failed for him had been posted
improperly, and that the parts would be combined properly. After the
download finished, with no errors, we had 32 little files named
filename.rar.01 and filename.rar.02 and so on.I downloaded the same
file on my system (different ISP so different news server) and it was
fine. Switching his system to the previous release of BNR2 corrected
the problem; he wasn't interested in finding why the current version
failed. This was all under Win98se, not 2k or xp.

How large is your MsgDB.bnr file? Almost a GIG?!?!
Why and of what use is a huge database? My setup runs quickly and
the DB stays small. Here's how. Us BNR3. I have 7 servers and 21
groups.
(mp3, vcd, svcd, divx, cbt to name a few. The best and most
complete is set for normal (headers and articles). The other 6 are
set for articles only with 1 connection each.
All are XHDR with "Don't check for
new/expired articles within range" checked in the advanced tab.
Try this: Limit the number of articles downloaded to
1000 in the HEADER SERVER's properties then close BNR3 and delete
the database.
This will get you caught up very quickly. Then
you can remove this limit for subsequent header downloads.
Expire headers every 1 day. Use only 1 thread on each server for
header download.
Works for me fine this way.
If the DB starts to slow down then repeat. I have
2 instances of BNR3 running together with different groups. While
I'm opening one group I'm checking the headers in the other so

I've also seen a variant of this happen on my setup (0.14.7.448 Linux).
I occasionally use NZBs to download stuff that's posted in NGs to which
I don't subscribe. I use the Import NZB dialog to browse for the NZB
and create a new download directory (ie. I say /my/download/dir where
/my/download/ already exists).

I notice that the download directory almost always has a slash
auto-appended, so the download gives me:

  /my/download/dir/part01.rar
  /my/download/dir/part02.rar
  /my/download/dir/part03.rar

However, once in a blue moon, I get this instead:

  /my/download/dirpart01.rar.1
  /my/download/dirpart01.rar.2

Hey frothingslosh

You and I have been around a fair while now :) We have
had our moments of disagreement, enlightment etc. BUT
I didn't write the below quote, however I did answer
the guy who wrote it in much the same way that you
did.

Have a great day and enjoy the week that is coming
your way.

Getting queue to download

I'm a total newbie to BNR2 but have been using Agent for years. I
changed because I've started trying to download DVD's and Agent keeps
getting overloaded and because the version I'm using doesn't support
NZB files.

I've installed BNR2 just fine and configured my server (Giganews). I
imported an NZB file and the component parts showed up just fine in
the Queue.

But for the life of me I can't figure out how to start downloading
the parts that are in the que. If I look at the Queue menu I see:
Pause, Score, Delete, Target and Select All, but nothing that starts
the downloading. If I right-click on the parts I get the same
choices. Double-clicking does nothing. I'm connected to the server
and the app tells me that Giganews is ready.

I am befuddled as to what to do to start the download. Can anyone
help?

Thanks,

HW

Re: Putting together the pieces / resolution post

I'm not endeared to the Yahoo quoting process and I often edit down to
just repeat the key point. I appologize for any error that may have
been made in the process that would attribute a quote to the wrong person.
