What would cause segments to vanish?

I'm seeing something that, to me, seems very strange and am hoping
that someone else can explain it.

First of all, if it even matters, My IsP, BellSouth, has been having a
lot problems with their news server lately. Second, I start bnr2 with
the -quick and the -test1 switches, so that headers are not aged out
and deleted, since that can cause database corruption problems.

So this weekend I was downloading, but a file that I wanted was very
incomplete. I grabbed all of the segments that I could and hoped that
more would show up. A few more did come in during a later download,
but not quite enough to get a good download, even with par2 files.
Each time I would look at these files I would mark the newsgroup as
read. On occasion I would also turn off the filter that would show
only the new segments and filter for a keyword in the files I was
interested in to see if I may have picked up more segments but still
not have a complete file for any of the files in the set. This worked
fine at first, I could see all of the parts that I had already downloaded.

But on Sunday, without ever having reset the database, starting BNR2
with the above flags, and after downloading a new set of headers and
seeing no new files for the group I was interested in, I went back to
look at the old group, turning off the NEW filter and searchng on the
same keyword. This time BRN showed me only 2 segments for the files I
was trying to get, even though I know thet there had been many more in
the database and that I had in fact downloaded the segents that now no
longer showed up!

I can understand that these segments may have expired from the server
(although they are new enough that they should not have). Or that my

Re: Re: msg file

Jeff...

Again, I hate to see something as good as BNR die on the vine because of
lack of time and commitment. As you know Patrick once told me if he could
not work out the details with you he would turn BNR over to me. I have made
you the same offer I made him

So.... If you guys will turn it over to me, I plan to place full time
programmer(s) on the BNR project to workout the bugs, optimize the code and
enable the remaining features. As I told you several months ago, I only
require that I have full and final say on any changes made. My
programmer(s) would have to satisfy me not someone who does not work for me.
I might do it on a contract basis with you but, for a number of reasons,
would prefer to do it under my business name. Patrick and you should receive
full credit for your work.

Let me know

Wait. Those are different things. You can avoid the startup scan. That will
prevent BNR from _purging_ expired articles from the db. But it still will
continue to _mark_ articles as expired, whenever you refresh a group or
you try to download them and the server says it no longer has them. The
scan doesn't mark the articles as expired, is only for labeling as free the
space they are using.

There is no way to tell BNR to not expire articles.

Apart from that, there seems to be some problem spreading thru the feeds.
Starting on Friday, I think, I couldn't download a post two days old. The
headers were in the server, but the articles weren't. Same thing with my
lower priority server. Since then, completion is a shame. Only Octanews
seems complete, but I can't get all my downloads from them or I'll run out
of credits pretty soon.

Regards.

I'm sure many of us would like to see BNR have more resources devoted to it
(while also understanding the current situation). Still, what you propose is
somewhat confusing, at least at first glance. The source is out there. If
you can improve it, improve it. The only reason I can see Patrick (or Jeff
for that matter) not wanting to include improvements is if it doesn't meet
with their vision of the product. Why can you not work with them to

Re: Future of BNR

The message you reference was written to Jeff... that it got public was, I
assume, my mistake. However, it clearly was not written to you.

However, perhaps in the future when responding to things you know nothing
about you should ask and not assume. If you had, you'd know Jeff previously
told me to go to work and he'd approve or not after it was done. As I told
him then, I'll not spend thousands to have the work trashed at a programmers
whim.

I neither have the time or inclination to deal with responses such as yours
to an offer to dedicate my wallet to a free program. You should not assume
the worst in folk but thanks for reminding me that so many people do.

Jeff....I withdraw my offer. Good luck with the project

You assume? Take ownership. You're a leader, remember?

It was written to a public list and is therefore open to commentary from
anyone reading the list. If you want to make sure nobody but the intended
party comments on something, send it to him privately.

Perhaps. But it isn't going to happen. If I have something to say, I'm going
to say it. As for knowing nothing about it, I know everything I needed to
know. The way you want to do things is ridiculous and that's why nobody took
you up on your offer.

What else should he do? Approve it before he's even seen anything? Approve
