Interesting. I did some VB at university.

That's good to know. I have been looking for something with the relative ease
of VB but the power and structure of C for a while. Coming from the Amiga, I
was surprised at how poor development tools were for Windows, particularly
when it comes to GUI toolkits.

Re: New file uploaded to bnr1

Delphi and Borland C++ Builder, IMHO, has blown the socks off of VB and
Visual Studio for years. Visual Studio .NET is the first real
competition to Delphi. But having said that, VB and VS have many more
users due to inertia and Bill.

One of my customers requires that I use .NET and I have a greater
appreciation of Visual Studio but most of the bells and whistles have
been in Delphi for years.

If you know C/C++, Delphi is almost the same language and I found easy
to learn. I would not call Delphi "visual turbo pascal", as that
doesn't give it justice, :).

Well, that's good news. My copy of Delphi 6 finally arrived, so when I get a
spare moment I'm going to have a go at compiling BNR3. I then plan to start
with a few cosmetic changes, just to test a few things out, before moving on
to a bit of optimisation (if I can find any) and perhaps look at some new
features (posting, at least text).

I have not used QT before, but I hear it's quite easy to pick up.

RE: Re: New file uploaded to bnr1

One quick point however.

It wont be quite that simple.

You’ll first have to make sure you have all the relevant component packages that bnr uses installed into your Delphi directories.

There was a list of those somewhere…. I don’t remember it being long, but I do remember that was why I couldn’t actually compile the thing, I just have poked around looking at the code in the past.

Just a quick history / comment. For a long while when people used to talk about Delphi they meant the IDE. The
language was actually called Object Pascal. But then over the years they extended and did so much and
basically to avoid all the confusion they simply started referring to both IDE and language as Delphi. So
now Delphi refers to basically the language they created based on Object Pascal.

Disclaimer: I've not used Delphi but from my understanding the Delphi of today is basically Object Pascal +
a ton of extensions / enhancements / etc.

Yes, I did expect that... My guess would be at least the database related
stuff, something for sqlite and of course QT.

Isn't a list of packages part of the "project file" (or whatever this IDE
calls it)?

RE: Re: New file uploaded to bnr1

there is a "uses" clause, but it's going to list the individual units that
are used, not the overal package

Re: Will there be anymore development on BNR3?

Maybe you could help those of us who evidentially haven't got our copy
set us as well as yours by detailing the specifics of your setup. I've
found that 9.3 was the most reliable version i've ever had. The others
still work but they don't seem to be as reliable when running over a
period of several weeks and/or months.

Try searching the message archives. There are basically three major
optimisations you can do.

1. Go into the BNR database options settings and change the settings for the
article database. First, increase the memory cache. I use 50000 by default,
100000 with very large groups. How large you make it depends on how much RAM
you have, I have 1GB. Next, set Default Synchronous to Off. Finally, set
Default Temp Store to Memory. This will slightly increase the chances of
database corruption if your machine or BNR crashes, but in my experience it's
not generally a problem.

2. Defrag and vacuum your databases using the batch file scripts that have
been posted here many times. Do this periodically, depending on how fast
article turnover is in your groups.

3. Buy a faster hard drive, or use RAID.

Paul
