RE: RE: Best model ADSL USB External modem ?

Thanks for that.

I purchased a Speedtouch 530 from Infortek (less than $200)

Works well as a router, with 1660kb DSL line speed down. Not bad for 6km's
approx. Interestingly the Telecom (downer) install tech’s M1122 could only
get 730kb or so. 1.5 km's up the road at the A cabinet he had to by-pass, he
could get 2500kb link.

After letting it settle in on router mode, I needed to get the public IP
onto the IPCop box for IPSEC VPN, No-ip, better snort logging.

Changed it over to DHCP Spoofing mode as you recommend,
(NZ_RtPPPoA_dhcp_spoof.ini) from www.speedtouch.net.nz

Changed IPCop RED to DHCP, and it worked – ipcop has the public
222.152.253.* ip.

>From what I read there wasn’t much chance of getting it going on USB mode
with IPCop, most of the docs talk about the Speedtouch Pro, 330 or Home.

You’re right, I couldn’t get bridge mode and ipcop doing the authentication
working, even though the docs said it could be done, and the ipcop 1.4
release talks about Speedtouch PPPoE(oA). There’s no good docs on it
anywhere I could find.

Thanks for your help.

Telecom Jetstream Phone Numbers

How does one go about getting an ADSL account checked if its not Xtra?

I'm with Paradise and have Jetstream Plus. Last billing month I went over my
10gb and had my connection limited back to 64k.
Yesterday my new month started and full speed resumed.
Today I was knocked back to 64k again, but have only used 160mb of data.
Paradise says its a Telecom issue and I must contact them.
Telecom says I must contact my ISP.

Stuck in a loop here.

Does anyone have a Telecom phone number that will lead me to someone who knows
whats going on?
I cant find any relevant numbers on their website or in the phone book..

Cheers
Chris.

While I hate to say it, Telecom is in the right here and the advise you
received from Paradise / TelstraClear is, uh.. incorrect.

The email I got from telecom when I changed to jetstream plus says:

> If you have any concerns about the speed please call your ISP (Xtra
> customers please call 0800225598).

Re: Telecom Jetstream Phone Numbers

Your ISP should be willing to log a fault on your behalf - thats their
job. They shouldn't have bounced you, especially if you indicated to them
that you're 'doing the loop'.

Otherwise the Jetstream helpdesk <at> Telecom are an option, but should not
be your _first_ option.

I found some phone details <at>
http://www.telecom.co.nz/chm/0,5123,203141-202581,00.html#contact which
may work for you. Search is a wonderful thing :-)

Cheers
Mark.

Ah the joys of theory vs practice.

In theory you should only over call your ISP.
In practice your ISP is being dumped upon by Telecom from such a great
height that they want you to ring Telecom for them as they are so fed up
with getting little/no responce from any calls they themselves make.

I had a Major ADSL issue about 3 weeks ago. 5 minutes after I get a
senior Telecom rep on the phone it is fixed (magically i belive) and
hasn't occured again. Orcon could get no details out of Telecom other
than "there is a nationwide issue with no eta".

Sad sorry state of affairs.

Running a Web Server on a LAN

Hi
I just bought and setup an XH1169 Router (with a 5 port switch) for our LAN
and it's working fine, except for the issue mentioned on the DSE support
page - one of our networked PCs runs a Web Server (IIS) so we can test
client websites locally.
Is there a way to configure the XH1169 to browse that web server from within
the network?

cheers

Firstly, this isn't an ADSL issue, and I exepct to see the usual flamers
on the list pointing this out

However, in the interests of being helpful, have you tried just pointing
your browser at the IP address of the machine running IIS ?

ie, if the machine is using 192.168.0.1, then point the browser at
http://192.168.0.1/

if you need to have DNS work in order to make virtual sites on the same
IIS server accessible, you'll need to kludge entries into your hosts
file (on the machine running the browser) - on windows 2000, this is
located in c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts... on XP, change winnt to
windows.

For example:

Either point the browser to the pc's name (http://webserver/) or see if the
router allows you to enter your own hostnames into its dns.

Re: Running a Web Server on a LAN

Well, I feel silly, because I have 5 PCs running XP, the server I want to
browse sites on is running Server 2000, and Im on Mac OS X. I was testing
from the Mac ... The web server is viewable without problem from anywhere
else on the network...
Now I just have to work out how to get this Mac to resolve IP addresses from
machine names and I'll be fine
Thanks for the prompt help guys :)
