Usage

Hello
Is anyone else getting days when no international usage is showing up on the
usage page.I have no usage showing for 18/19 Nov contacted the appropiate
help desk and advised that it will not now be recorded.
 I now find no usage for 29/30 Nov and Dec 01.
I am just a bit concerned that my usage for these days may be added to a
future month interestingly enough the missing days are the days I had been
downloading large demos.

The great usage debate...  

I'm on Xtra JetStart128k and have been checking my usage from time to time.

So far I find that it seems to run 2 days behind and not 2 hours as published 
in the glossy user guide they sent me a week after I was connected (no much 
help by that time - but it looks very impressive!)

I have followed this type of debate for 3 years on an Australian forum - 
ww.whirlpool.net.au 

Telstra BigPond (the Aus equivalient of Xtra - the biggest) have the same 
sort of problems.

Every time you spot a problem you should call up billing, question it and 
make sure they put a note on your account to that effect (you should keep a 
diary and call up from time to time just to check the notes are right - you 
have that right under the 1993 privacy act).

By doing this you are effectivly proving that their billing systems are not 
up to scratch and the accuracy is questionable.

I'm not 100% sure about NZ law but I suspect you'd find that they can't hold 
you to a bill if the accounting system can be shown to be faulty.

I rang the JetStream Helpdesk for the fourth time in as many months, to
let them know that my usage was not being correctly recorded when it
rolled over from one billing period to the next.  In this instance, they
had carried forward 450MB from the previous period to the current period
- a significant error, when I'm on a 1GB cap (I'm an Xtra JetStream Home
1000 Full Speed user)!

Apparently, according the JetStream tech I spoke to, the whole issue of
accurate usage metering will be finally resolved following an update
that will be implemented on the 10th December.

This post prompted me to check my usage now that I have had one month
with my new ISP.

I have not used my computer differently since switching ISPs.  My usage with
Xtra for my JetStart account was from 1.9 to 3 gigs a month.  That is what their
usage page showed and I think that was only international traffic.  With my new
ISP it is 700 megs international and 200 national.  So far this month this
pattern is continuing.  I have done 250 megs total in 10 billing days.

I wonder why there is a five fold difference from Xtra and MaxNet for my
usage.  Is this to do with how the data is charged or is it just that I have
used so much less?  MaxNet have my total hours connected accurate so it
is not like they missed a few days.

Want to have a bet on that?

If it was simple then they would have done it before unless they are totally
incompetent.  That means that they are incompetent or it is a complex issue.
Either way, I do not think things will change - do you?

errr no.

I'm currently working on a project to count usage.  Complex is the right word 
for it.  The volumes of data that have to be accounted for is where the 
problem comes in.  I should be done in real time but few seem to agree with 
that view and prefer to do everything in batches.... problem is that if you 
get behind with the batches you risk never catching up again.

Now while everyone is trying to count data at the agrigation points.

Yes, we have a mail loop.  The guity party appears to be:

Received: from coppernz.no-ip.info (219-89-170-
202.jetstream.xtra.co.nz [219.89.170.202])

I have blocked them and informed them of the error of their ways.  
Could someone from XTRA please contact them and also let them know.
