Re: Jetstart ISP recommendations

Im probably the wrong person to respond to this :P
I would like to point out though this article:

http://idg.net.nz/webhome.nsf/nl/76E8799ACD86E7F8CC256B6E0003D9D4

QSI are looking at moving their cap to 10 gig, which would put them on a
Par with Paradise and most other capping ISPs (QSI's is currently 7G). From
recent reviews Paradise actually offer a pretty good Jetstart service.

World-Net in my experience are pretty poor, they also have a rep for not
paying their bills (!) which could leave to traffic issues. You also
apparently struggle to get decent english-speaking technical support.
I certainly heard enough whines about them when their dialup flatrate was
competitive.

Im looking at providers myself at the moment and Paradise are looking
pretty attractive.

To clarify, I work for Quicksilver but I like to have a connection outside
of the network I work for as it provides for some redundancy when things
fall over / makes it easy to check things from a third party network. I'm
currently with Attica, and admittedly I havnt checked what they offer
Jetstart for yet... (checked their site, $34.95/month with no published
limitations - Might just do that considering I hold an account there
already, and their service has been reasonable)...

(For the record, although I work for Quicksilver, my opinions posted here
are mine and mine alone.)

Nevertheless I understand your position Jonathan, but you must surely also

Well, the tech support doesn't matter much to me, as I mentioned. They
have their DNS and mail server addresses on their website, which should be
pretty much all I need. I'll bear the comments in mind, though.

Paradise, however, will happily let me go over the standard traffic cap,
and bill me for the extra traffic. I *really* don't like variable costs
if I can avoid them, otherwise Paradise might be an option.

I expect they're fine for regular users, but this is a shared (ie, high
traffic use) connection.

Just out of interest what happens if someone hits there 10GB limit?

Do Paradise give a cursasy call before the limit is hit.
Can more bandwith be brought or the traffic just stopped for the month?

You don't get any warning, and any overrun you pay by the MB. 20c for intl
and 2c for local

You do have a v good usage panel on the Paradise website that keeps you
updated on your status.. Plus you pay for 28 days and not a calendar month

Xtra Js cap...

Well this newly proposed Xtra Jets data cap stinks doesn't it. Not only
do they have the monopoly on the local loop so others struggle to give
us competitive rates, now xtra are lookin at capping too. I just
switched to xtra as isp to avoid ihugs Js 10GB cap. I wouldve been in
favor of them Increasing the quality and giving us more kbps not
reducing the quantity yet again. I am sure I am not speaking just for
myself but I was wondering if anyone knows of any plans for more kbps on
Js? Ciao, Zsolt

Re: Xtra Js cap...

I thought that xtra's speeds were already so incredibly slow that you
wouldn't be able to make your 10 gigs in a month ;-)

Need help pinholing dynalink rta020 router...

Hi all, I just set up pinholing for netmeeting and am wanting to check
if I did it right.
In the virtual server/setup area I entered a new entry which mapped port
1720 for netmeeting to port 1720 on my static ip address of my PC. Does
this sound right? This is what it looks like. Has anyone else a RTA020?

3 TCP Myconnection 1720 192.168.1.2 1720

TIA,
Zsolt

Remember it was "Telecom" who offered the Free Installs, and it is only
"Xtra" who are (have they officially?) announced the Cap On Jetstart thru
them. Remember there are lots more ISP's out there who offer Jetstart. From
what I've heard from people.. the speed of Jetstart started getting slower a
while before the free installs, but I guess people didn't get all the facts
and throught "Xtra = Telecom = 16KB/Sec all the time as Xtra has Unlimited
Banwidth) and joined Xtra and it was slow. There are ALOT of people who
still think they will get the best service thru Xtra as they are owned by
Telecom, but Xtra buys bandwidth etc exactly as other ISP's have to, and
have the compete the same same with them.
