speedtouch / pinholing

One quick question guys .. after I have pinholed a number of ports and
saved them, does the router need to be restarted, ie. Powered off and
then back on again for these to take effect ?

Cheers

Jithen

My ST Pro pinholes work fine without a reset. I can't even remember the
last
time I reset the router actually. I guess my uptime must be 1 or 2
months by
now.

Got a quick one for ya. Speedtouch Pro. How long does it normally take
to
get a connection to the ISP when enabling the PPP connection??
If I disable and reenable the PPP connection, it can take up to
30seconds or
so before it stops 'trying' and goes into an 'up' state. Im using an
Xtra
Jetstart account.
This isnt just a case of me not refreshing the browser as I see the same
thing from the CLI and have confirmed it with a continuous ping to a
server
at the isp.
I notice it most when i have a micro-outage as it takes a while before I
get
connectivity again after I get a physical line drop... the line comes
back
(light is on solid rather than flashing) and then it can be anything up
to a
minute before I have net access again.

RE: MSN Messenger

Hey Guys,

I pinholed all those ports as you guys suggested and messenger is still
unable to send files or have voice conversations. I can however receive
files but the sending doesn't seem to work.

Any other ideas guys ???

Cheers

Jithen

Assuming the your internal PC that has MSN running has IP address
10.0.0.1
(change as necessary for your network), the appropriate ST Pro command
line
configuration is below.

nat create protocol=tcp inside_addr=10.0.0.1 inside_port=6891
outside_addr=0
outside_port=6891
nat create protocol=tcp inside_addr=10.0.0.1 inside_port=6892

Hey Ben.

A little reading and I found out that you need to open TCP port 1863,
however that will only open up messeging (which already works), so you
really need to skip this and read the following..

To enable voice communications, make sure that outgoing TCP connections
from
port 6901 are enabled. Also enable UDP packets where either the source
or
the destination port is 6901.

To enable file transfers, enable both incoming and outgoing TCP
connections
to the 6891-6900 range of TCP ports. This allows each sender to perform
up
to 10 simultaneous file transfers. Note that if only TCP port 6891 is
open,
users are only able to perform one file transfer at a time.

RE: MSN Messenger

Ok, I think I have finally figured out the solution to this problem that
many users have been experiencing.

Using a Personal Socks Ver 4 / 5 Server either on your home machine, or
machine on the network makes it run ..

Im testing it now and will let you guys how I get on ..

RE: MSN Messenger

Yeah Nik,

I think it's the only option I have and just to wonder when Microsoft is
going to implement a feature in Messenger so that it will support NAT.
It be good to see sometime, as I know of many businesses and other
companies out there using Messenger for communication and are behind
routers etc using NAT.

Gonna have to wait I guess :)

Cheers

Hmmm ... just as I guessed ....

"This problem occurs because MSN Messenger file transfer and voice
features
do not work through NAT routers because there is no NAT editor to
correctly
translate the IP header information. "

RE: ISPs

Hey Phil,

Well, to answer you're question about a ISP. Well, I guess I can suggest
my isp. I have excellent service from my isp. Since im the
networking/computer hardware field I do not need the support just like
you from a help desk etc.

To be really honest, I haven't experienced an outage from my ISP. Its
been really good. Ive heard of many individuals etc, having problems,
but ive had nothing. The only problem ive had in about the last 6 months
has been a proxy server that has gone down for a couple hours at them,
but that has been about it.

The isp im with is NET4U. You can also get a static ip address from
them. Since I use a router, and im connected all the time, my ip address
never changes. Goes to show that i never have outages and my connection
never drops.

Well, just a little from me about my isp. Give Sahil a call at NET4u and
he will sort you out if you need any help or other information.

Cheers .. Hope This Helps :)

Jithen

dsl problem

Hey Guys,

Did anyone else experience the problem earlier today. I got dropped from
my isp and couldn't authenticate again. Adsl Helpdesk said something had
gone down and they were trying to fix it.

Was just wondering :)

Cheers
