There were the odd Nokia Ni500 router reported on this list as having this
problem.

Speaking of which, Thanks to Terry at the ADSL helpdesk, I'm getting a
visitor tomorrow morning to stick a jack on the wall, as a trial customer
for the NEV exchange.

That little orange blinky light on my 3com will hopefully become green :)

Re: VPN Server with Win2K Pro - or Server?

Hi Damon,

yeah it is possible, many SOHO networks use 2kpro in workgroup situation for
vpn access to there mini-lan. it does work but not really the goods for a
real network.

it depends on your network topology and type of network really, the vpn
demands, and security you want.

I would reccemend using win2kserver as the vpn server, best practice is not
to run it on the DC, or a win2kserver that is running NAT or a server
running many other network related servicies, usual story with MS stuff etc.

some people go for thirdy party vpn solutions aswell, that i cant speak for,
accept the use of linux box's in between etc.

A common senario i have deployed is:

 internet - cisco adsl -- linuxbox -- switch -- DC's and LAN's etc
                                        |
                             2kserver -vpn server

good luck

julian

RE: ADSL PROBLEMS

Your 15k d/l sounds about right with Jetstart. That should be plenty for
online games. The extra bandwidth you get logged into the gaming relm is
handy when you invite all your mates around to play online from your place.

Your ping can fluctuate during game play due to many factors. Check your
game settings, have you ajusted them from modem to dsl?

the number of PCs sharing your jetstart connection while you play can
increase your ping,

the game server or isp network maybe under heavy load while your playing
especially during peak hours.

Also where you play and which isp you use can make a difference to your
ping. For example my DSL use to be with World-net before I switched to
Paradise and my pings to the Paradise game servers improved by around
10-20ms as a result.

Chris

DHCP and IPCONFIG

Can anyone tell me how to force the IP address to a specified one when running ipconfig /renew "specified LAN
connection" from a Bat
file within W2k Pro. For some reason the IP's obtained this was vary randomly within a small range. I should
have expected to get
the same IP address, but not always....
Any ideas appreciated.

Re: DHCP and IPCONFIG

Check your DHCP Server settings for this.. Also I don't see this is really
DSL Related at all. If you want the same address all the time.. just
staticlly assign it.

Thanks

Re: DHCP and IPCONFIG

If you statically assign it then it won't release and renew using IPconfig, at least when I tried that....
And it is related to DSL use in the sense I am using it as a switch for connecting to my DSL box, however the
pinholes need the same
IP address to work....

RE: DHCP and IPCONFIG

This is your DHCP server's problem, not Windows2000.

FYI check out the NETSH command.

It's not even a problem as such, it is valid behaviour - after all it is
DYNAMIC host configuration protocol :)

It's entirely up to the DHCP server whether it gives a client the same ip
address or not after a client releasing and renewing. The DHCP protocol
allows the client to *request* a specific ip address, (most clients will
request the same ip address they had last time) but the server is at
liberty to ignore the suggested address, and assign a different address if
it chooses.

Likewise, most sane DHCP servers keep a "recent memory" of what ip
addresses were allocated to specific machines (based on hardware MAC) and
will try if possible to allocate the same ip address - but there is also no
requirement that they MUST do this.

Regards,
Simon

Re: DHCP and IPCONFIG

How can one request the same or specify the desired (and previously assigned) IP address then? Can one?
In this case the DHCP server is the M1122.
