Re: My strange mispressing of Force Majeure on vinyl

This FM mispressing is your standard Stemra Virgin label stating distributed
by Ariola Benelux, B.V.
I'm not sure where you find the words "Sabam" or "Buma"??

Vic

I had the good fortune to be <at> TD's USA debut in Milwaukee. Some things
I remember:

Waiting outside the ladies washroom for my date (now my wife) as the
show was starting. The whole theatre is vibrating as the Tangs are
doing their best to simulate a Cape Kennedy rocket launch. A guy
standing next to me similarly waiting shouts at the washroom door,
"Dear, I believe the show is starting." That rather struck me as being
humorously obvious.

I got the sense that a lot of the concert attendees didn't know much
about TD but attended at the urging of friends or were merely curious.
I dare say that their ears and eyes were opened to a whole new world.
Obviously the use of synths to create a symphonic tapestry was not the
usual concert fare of the day. But also combined with that was a visual
first for most, if not all that were present for this historical event,
the laser light show Laserium. For better or for worse, this light
fantastic combined with the music fantastic served as a one-two punch
of dazzlement for the senses.

At most concerts people chat, move around. Not this show. I dare say
that the whole audience paid rapt attention 'cause it was all so
incredibly different. Cutting edge. At that moment unarguably the

RE: Re: It was 30 years ago today...

Harry. You've made my day. Exactly the sort of input I was hoping for.

I'd have given an arm and a leg to be at TD's '77 tour. First time I saw
them was the Cyclone tour '79.

As you say, it must have been so different to any event a lot of the
audience had attended before!

And the dynamics of the sound must have been awesome. This is what we miss
so much from the Tree recordings. You get a glimpse of it on Encore if you
have a decent subwoofer. The depths the Moog / PE Modular etc could plunge
to were (are) amazing. The detailed sequencing mesmerizing.

'75 to '77 was a unique time for live EM thanks to TD. It's a shame a band
with the same approach and philosophy couldn't be given the same opportunity
to tour so extensively.

Coventry DVD

OK, I guess I should have paid more attention to some of the reviews
regarding this Faux-Live DVD. Yesterday, I found some time to sit down
and watch the DVD, and I was outraged. Just some excerpts of the album
Ricochet, with about 3-4 minutes of(slow-motioned)footage from the
concert in Coventry Cathedral, repeated over and over and mixed
horribly with some 1980-style computer graphics was all I saw!
The second track starts from the middle , with the worst fade in
possible. The whole disc is only 27 minutes.
Absolute rip-off. Wish I could send back the DVD and ask for my money
back.
I'm an avid fan of TD since 1983, and just like all the other hardcore
fans tried to collect everything under their name, but I believe those
people at Respect Records, or whoever responsible for creating such
crap should be ashamed of themselves. Just like the Pope banned TD
from performing in any Catholic church after Reims concert, this
company should be banned from fabricating or distributing any
Tangerine Dream CD or DVD.
For those of you who haven't bought the DVD, just save your money and
anger, and avoid this junk.

Then it's very futuristic, because the video is from 1975!
Seriously, an excerpt of the video was available for preview at
http://tangerinedreamcoventrydvd.com , so you could have watched it
before buying.

Classic Rock Magazine May 2007 Madcap Review

Here is the review of Madcap that is in this month's issue of Classic Rock magazine:-

=================
"Crowning 40 years of electronica with...poetry?"

Dedicated to the late Syd Barrett, Tangerine Dream's latest album gleefully shatters whatever
preconceptions you may harbour
regarding the German synth jockeys.
Except for a rearrangement of the traditional 'Lake of Pontchartrain'. Madcap's Flaming Duty draws it's
lyrics (yes, lyrics) from the
poems of quill-pushers like Blake and Shelley.
What might seem like pretentious overindulgence from other bands is actually concise by TD standards,
with no track creeping over
10 minutes. The album's lush, textured sound isn't far removed from the crisp, modern art rock of Nine
Horses or No-Man. 'Solution
to all Problems' builds to a majestic crescendo of bleeps and beats, although Chris Hausl's mantric
delivery threatens to squash the poetry from the poetry.

***** (five out of ten rating)

Jonathan Lewis
================

Pretentious overindulgence ? - obviously not heard the Dante trilogy then Jonathan ?

Also in the back section concert listings is the advert for the gig at the Astoria.

Re: Coventry DVD

I remember seeing it years ago on a bootleg VHS tape. It's got those
60's and early 70's psychadelic effects. The thing I didn't like was
that it's the Conventry concert footage but with Ricochet as the
soundtrack so the music doesn't sync up with anything they were doing.

If you're into looking at all the gear they used in those days, it's
of some interest but it would have been better if they just posted it
on YouTube.

Re: Coventry DVD

I can understand if people feel ripped off, you don't get much for
your money (and they were and are charging too much for a lot of
peoples wallets)...but why is everybody surprised about Ricochet
being overdubbed? this was done by Tony Palmer in 1975, he edited his
shots 'at the time'...it's not a whole concert recording
therefore 'no original' soundtrack would fit, you have to completely
re-re edit it and then it still wouldn't be a concert recording, it
would be what it already is...an early 'music video'. It's just short
excerpts from the gig (some shots are repeated again and again), with
contemporary effects 'exactly' how it was broadcast in 1976. It's a
historic document, it stands as it is. Personally I haven't got a
problem with the DVD, bar the very very short running time. It should
have been added to a new TD DVD as an extra.
