Call For Works: Sonic Screens 2012

U.S.O. Project is pleased to announce that the 2012 edition of Sonic Screens will be focused  entirely to the electro-acoustic music praxis.

Specifically, candidates should produce a composition for instruments and real-time signal processing (live electronics).

Two works will be selected to be played during the concert.

The requirements are as follows:

  1. The piece must be composed for Violin and Cello as a duo. Scores for solo violin or cello will not be taken into account.

  2. The Score (in .pdf format) must be graphical and not in traditional notation. The interpretational and playing instructions should be made clear, in order for the players to follow them even without the presence of the composer.

  3. The electronic processing must be developed and implemented using Max/MSP or Kyma. (we will not accept patches developed in Pure Data or SuperCollider). The multichannel format for the spatial diffusion must be up to 6.0 (4.0 works are still eligible).

  4. The type of interaction should follow the "ecosystemic" paradigm and should be as autonomous as possible.

  5. The work should not exceed a total duration of 12 minutes.

The evaluation criteria will focus on originality and effectiveness of the interplay between the electronic and instrumental parts.

The deadline for all submissions is set for 30th June, 2012.

Interested composers and sound artists should send the material (Score + Patch) within this date.

The two selected works will be presented during the evening of Sonic Screens in Milan. The event will be recorded for digital distribution (on Synesthesia Recordings netlabel).

The names of the musicians who will perform the selected scores will be announced in March.

U.S.O. Project (Matteo Milani & Federico Placidi), composer Daniele Corsi and the musicians chosen to perform during the concert will form the reading panel which will evaluate the submitted works.

The selected works will be announced in September 2012.

Re: Call For Works: Sonic Screens 2012

So you want genuine, respectable composers to produce new pieces for a
specific situation, for an open competition with apparently no
extrinsic reward, using expensive software (with excellent free
alternatives explicitly excluded with no explanation)? Great satire!

evaluation criteria - was Re: Call For Works: Sonic Screens 2012

As an open source software user, I was particular impressed with:

The evaluation criteria will focus on originality and effectiveness of
the interplay between the electronic and instrumental parts.

In an age of transparency I'm keen to leave some of the justification in the ear of the beholder and for a competition like this we all know what we're getting into. However, I've got customers paying nine thousand pounds a year for a very detailed breakdown of 'what do you mean by originality?' and 'what do you mean by interplay?'. And when I reply 'it's about communication' or 'pushing boundaries' or 'developing an idea' they say 'what do you mean by...'

Although I think I know the answer to my question (ftp://ftp.shef.ac.uk/pub/uni/projects/cmd/sonicart_recipesandreasonings.pdf will form our course text) I'm continually surprised by how difficult I find answering the question 'how long does my piece have to be?' (pieces of string just don't cut it by the way).

Best wishes for a thoroughly competitive new year!
Adrian.

Dear Federico,

Thank you for your mail. Unfortunately I am not able to accept it for
internal and technical reasons, which I cannot explain due to policy
decisions. However if you send it in the correct form, I will enter
your email into a competition, and I would be delighted to reply to it
if you should win.

Good luck,

alex

SuperCollider Workshop Get ready to get sucked into the supercollider vortex !! SuperCollider has established itself as probably the most powerful programming environment for real time sound synthesis, algorithmic/generative music and all sorts of other audio-related ap...plications. This three day intensive workshop welcomes participants of any discipline with or without prior programming or musical experience and guides them to their first sounds, instruments and musical structures with supercollider. Apart from a thorough introduction to the Supercollider language and the synthesis server, the workshop aims to be an informal introduction to algorithmic/generative music, GUI design, live coding and digital sound synthesis with SuperCollider. Excellent. In addition, I think all results should be submitted to Sonic Screens 2012. (See previous.)
