Loser-palooza, Vestax Tables

Yay...Yesterday I went and spun (first) at the Brain Forest Tent of
Lollapalooza. They had all Vestax gear. The Vestax tables are kinda nice,
and it was very very nice of Vestax to sponsor the tent...BUT...I don't
think any of the djs there (or anywhere else on the Lollapalooza tour) had
ever used those tables before.

My opinion (in case you care) : Those things are nice. I believe there are
2 popular vestax pro dj turntables in use right now. The ones we were on
were the shittier of the 2. They went from +-3 to +-6 to +-12, and you
could play records in reverse, as well as do other interesting things with
the speed. Only problem was that you needed a manual to be able to figure
out some of the functions. Having never used them before, I didn't know
how to do some of the cooler things.
Aside from that, I didn't like them. They didn't have the feel of
a Technics turntable. It was harder to beatmatch with them, but only
because I wasn't used to them. Towards the end of my set, they were easier
to use...So the learning curve from technics to vestax isn't that bad.
Hip Hop tricks : I felt like the tables were build very well, and
they felt very sturdy.  The platter didn't move at all when I pushed on it;
however, they were using Stanton Groovemaster carts. BLAH YUCK
BLEAUGH...No thanks. I didn't like them at all. Back-Cueing sucked. I'd
rather use a pair of Shure SC35C's, or Ortofons any day. So, don't bother
trying tricks unless you're a normal stanton trackmaster user.
The mixing board was pretty shitty. It was this great Vestax
mixer, but the gain control and the main volume control were both soldered
in place so that you couldn't tweak them. That's great protection for the
soundman, but I don't think he's ever mixed records in his life. As all
you djs know, some pressings are quieter than others. So if you have a low
pressing, don't bother playing it, it will sound like shit.

I've had the other model of Vestax tables for about 6 months now, and like
them better than Technics. The pitch goes is +-10, and there's no reverse
or anything. There is a pitch meter that is independent from the slider,
which is easier to use for calibration than using the dots on the side of
the platter. Probably the most useful feature is that there is a pitch
lock button to lock the pitch to 0 rather than automatically locking in
the middle of the slider. I've never used a pair of Technics where the
pitch was exactly right around the 0, they always jump up and/or down
above and below 0 so you basically lose the whole area around there. I
find the Vestax motors much stronger than that on 1200's. The only thing I
don't find better is the tone-arm which doesn't seem quite as stable - I
only notice this when scratching. On the other hand the anti-skating goes
up to 7, I find that the anti-skating on 1200's never goes up quite enough
to get the arm to be stable. The counter-weight on the arm will also go up
to about 7 grams (Technics go up to 3.5 or 4, I think), which means no
more nickels and pennies when spinning in rooms with less-than-stable
floors.

Visit to Cincinnati...

Hi, kids.

As most of you know, I regularly reside in the Western areas of our
geographically-categorized "midwest" region. I have the opportunity,
however, to make a rare trip "east" for 6 days next week.
...I hope to bring back for my king some of the jewels, gold, and spices
that we have heard originate in the mysterious eastern lands...*ahem*
Maybe not.

Anyway, I've already spoken to several kids from the area with whom I chat
on a regular basis about hanging out, but am most assuredly open to meeting
up with anyone else who wants to get together. If you reside in the area
and would like to chance a meeting with someone from the "other side,"
then go ahead and let me know with a PERSONAL reply. We can devise a plan
after having passed "Go" and collecting our $200.00.

Specifics:
Flying from Kansas City to Cincinnati.
Date of arrival in Cincy: Tuesday, August 5.
Date of return to KC: Sunday, August 10.

Thanks. It'll be a fun trip for me regardless of whether I meet anyone or
not, but I'm always game to meet new kids.

Always,
    Malicious Erinaceous ;-}

I'd definately stay away from the Groovemasters. I use Stanton 680s, which
I find have pretty good sound and don't skip much. As for more expensive
cartridges, the Ortofons are probably the best. When doing side-by-side
tests, I found them to have much punchier and brighter sound than either
the 680s or Groovemasters.A few people I've know have had problems with
them starting to short out or something after about 6 months. As for the
tracking, they're supposed to be better than anything else, but using an
Ortofon side by side with my 680s I actually found the 680 better for
scratching. The Ortofon needle may just have been worn down, I don't know.
