Howdy!

Greeting from Austin, Texas!

I am planning a trip to Chicago in May and was wondering if anyone could
fill me in on some of the things going on in the area during the 16-24th. I
may also be visiting Milwalkee during the week and was looking for info on
places to go check out while I am there.

Thanks in advance,

Shock AKA
Jorge

Re: Channel 4 and the Krusadin Kristian K00kz

I've been reading this thread awhile and found I would add my $0.02 on the
matter.

I've heard of the "so called" Media vs. Ravers rant before on the Texas
raves list and from my freinds in Austin. I totally understand the
reasoning behind getting angry at the media for misrepresenting ravers and
their cutlure.

Being a student studying the Mass Communication industy (currently, but
maybe for not too much longer) I think i can say that I believe the media is
not deliberately out to get us. Journalists in this country are highly
overworked and underpaid. They are given strict deadlines to do many
stories. Most Newspapers in this country work with staffs that are both new
and inexperienced and the day of the bold and daring journalist is truly
over. These days, most daily newspapers have little budgets to allow
journalists to accurately research every story in order to get every veiw
and maintain the "objective" point of veiw. The result is one sided stories
that tend to focus on certain issues, like drugs or crime in the rave scene,
and leaving out the anti-drug and cultural aspect. You can imagine what
little resources weekly readers have to do even better stories.

This does not explain the situation for TV. Television is definately where
the money is in the world of US Journalism. However, most stories get
anywhere from 30 seconds to 3 minutes to tell a "good story". To put this
in perspective, a CBS journalist once said that his entire 30 minute
newscast had the same amount of words as the front page of a daily
newspaper. How accurate can a half page article on ravers be? NOT AT ALL.
This does not excuse bad reporting, but please don't blame the media
entirely on this issue.

I'd aktually prefer someone (specially on a list like this) to spend the
time to think about what they're saying instead of just blurting it out.
Not to mention that text based communications is far more enabling for those
who are socially predisposed to being quiet than to randomly blathering into
a microphone.

Voice e-mail isn't anything new, btw. You've had lip-service on NeXT for
ages and it really doesn't take all that to record yourself using Windows
recorder and attaching it to email.

I don't:) I tend to think vocal communications are rather worthless, minus
those few times when in conversation with people who think before they speak.

Not really. And the technology isn't new (phones have been around for years ;)

I disagree. By "denying" them their forum, you also deny yourself the
chance dialog with them to express your views as well as hear theirs. The
more it's brought out into the open, the better chance we have of
confronting them in a safe, and as would be hoped, and open way.

You don't kill the mouse by closing your eyes and denying that it's there.

Besides, if pedophiles can have their own newsgroups, hate mongers should be
allowed theirs too. A weak argument, but none the less valid.

There is already an alt.music.white-power and alt.skinhead.white-power so I
don't know what all the hub-bub about this is. Not to mention an
alt.flame.nigger and various other groups.

So whoever is "on the alert" to "stop" the "spread of hate" is a little slow
on the uptake.

I don't see anyone rallying around anything except for the idea of a basic
fundamental right gauranteed to all. Because you disagree with someone's
view point, doesn't mean you are automatically correct to shut it out or
turn it off.

What I see from people (nobody on this list) who "want to shut it out" and
"turn it off" is a friendly form of facism and intellectual holier than
thou. Right minded people are the most annoying fuckers on the face of the
planet, I should know I am one. But I still know that trying to stifle and
or quiet something by denying them the same freedom I have is terribly wrong.

I've already typed up and printed out a letter to the Star Tribune, Pioneer
Press, City Pages, and the Reader.

Not to mention a lengthy (4 minutes+) message on their tip line... :)

They're probably watching this list tho. They had the mw-raves calendar on
the news.
