Miles Davis's Son has book signing party in East Village, NY

contact: Greg Masters
milesmonday <at> mac.com
212-777-2714

Miles Monday presents:

A book signing party for
Dark Magus: The Jekyll and Hyde Life of Miles Davis
by his son Gregory Davis

Monday, December 4, 6:30-8
Mo Pitkin's House of Satisfaction
34 Avenue A (between East 2nd and East 3rd Streets)
New York, NY 10009

Come meet musician and author Gregory Davis at a celebration of the
release of his memoir, Dark Magus, detailing life with his father,
Miles Davis.

Dark Magus (Backbeat Books, $24.95) is a no-holds-barred portrait of
Miles Davis that strips away the public perception and gets down to
the realities of his personality. The author also delves into Davis's
relationships with artists such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and
John Coltrane, his role as a mentor to young musicians, the ups and
downs of his career and its affect on his family, and the family's
turmoil over his final will.

Co-author Les Sussman will also be on hand to greet visitors and sign
books.

The book party for Dark Magus is held in conjunction with Miles
Monday, a weekly listening series devoted to the music of Miles Davis,
held each Monday at Mo Pitkin's from 6:30-8.

Miles Monday is an opportunity for folks to relax in a comfortable
lounge, sip a beverage, listen to Miles Davis music through a good
sound system, and discuss Miles' music with like-minded aficionados,
and other nice people. We play recorded music from every phase of
Miles' ever-evolving career — from bop to cool to Gil to modal to
abandonment of AABA to electric fusion transcendence to pop to hip
hop. And it's free.

Drink specials: Miles Martini, with Stoli: $5
Miles Margarita (Kind of Blue), with Blue CuraÁao: $3

For review copies of Dark Magus/interview requests/photos,

Having heard several tracks off this, I can tell you right now it's
worth the money. Some of Laswell's finer moments in recent years. (I
just wish there was a CD version for easier consumption.)

Which webhosts do you use (for streaming music, etc.)?

Hey gang,

I want to put together a simple-enough website to showcase, among other things, some of
the music I've been creating...

I have an old PC that I will eventually turn into a webserver, but not until I've had enough time
to educate myself on all of the related technical and security issues.

So in the meantime, I'd like to set up a possibly-long-term-temporary webhosting account
somewhere. I don't expect to generate mass traffic, but there will be streaming .mp3s. I'll be
designing my own site, so I don't need design services... just reliable, not-too-expensive
hosting...

Who do you (and those you know) use, and who would you (and those you know)
recommend?

I'm NYC-based, if that makes a difference...

Great big thanks,

Alan

Re: Which webhosts do you use (for streaming music, etc.)?

Hi Alan,
I use a starter site from earthlink and a flash player called the wimpy player that is
available from http://www.wimpyplayer.com/

It has a very cool feature that automatically creates a playlist based on any tracks that are
in the mp3 folder on your server. If you delete or add tracks, the player will update it's
playlist. You can also customize the look of the player. I'm very happy with it.

An Earthlink starter site is $20.00/mo and the wimpy player can be purchased for $30.00.

There are links to lots of wimpy players on their website. You can also check out my player
at http://www.mimomusic.com/ - just click on the listen link.

Best of luck, Matt

Bill Laswell (on French TV, I assume) in his studio & talking about
the Miles Davis remixes (Panthalassa).

Thanks to my bud, silentsquid, for pointing this out.

lost in(mix) translation

It may be interesting IF you speak French, but as the translation is read directly over BL's comments its rather annoying for those of us without the French to imagine what we are missing...

Re: lost in(mix) translation-> translation done

Should be close to this;)

Introduction:
Bill Laswell, remix master since about 15 years.
His last temptation: unreleased tapes from jazz giant Miles Davis

Bill Laswell based his career on the art of using the studio. He has
remixed the Rolling Stones* and Bob Marley.
He went to Morocco to record the Master Musicians of Jajouka and also
went in New-York's undergrounds to catch the masters of free-jazz.
We went at this Brooklyn studio where he told us more about his
current project of remixing Miles Davis electric and militant phase.

(black and white video footage of Wayne Shorter, Miles, DeJohnette)

Bill Laswell:
In the early 80's I had many opportunities to work with Miles Davis,
but I didn't exploited them when I should have to.
I didn't perseverate enough. I've been waiting too long because he
wasn't here anymore to participate to the project on which I was
working on.
I was wrong because I didn't realized that time was going fast. It
was a mistake.
I should have put more willingness to build stronger bases.

But when the opportunity to make something with some existing music
occurred, I've choosed to work with the melodic material of a
singular period: between 1969 and 1974.
My advice is that it was the time when he stopped making records and
composing music, he was just letting the tape rolling.
What we can here on the records of this period isn't similar to
what's on the tapes. It's not the "tradition", I mean, it's not what
he was playing that day, it's not what people believe it is.

These tapes have been intensivly manipulated, inverted, copied,
stopped, replayed, cut, chopped, erased, dubbed, and assembled to
sound as a continuous recording then threw on the market simply
because an artist ought his label a record. That's what we call a
business.
People doing these records were just fill in their contracts.
What we can hear on the records are the best experimental moments
taken from the tapes.
It corresponds to an experimental period that was radical and free in
the US.
Melodically, structurally and from a composing point of view, these
jazz records haven't been done in the traditional way, they are
pretty different.
So in 1997 I did the same with some tapes from that particular
period. I didn't changed or add something to the music. I just gave
these recordings another shape, that's all.

(black and white video footage of Miles)

From what I knew about Miles Davis and from the little experience I
had with him I'm convinced he would understand the final result. That
he would love it, and it's the only thing that counts

*journalist badly informed, probably thought about producing/mixing
Mick Jagger's "She's the boss"
