Re: M. A. N.

Yeah, Rod, there's some very "astute" journalism about Cage therein:

John Cage- Known as "the father of noise" to his devoted followers,
ironically this post-modern "composer"'s most well know work is
titled 4"33', which was nothing more than four minutes and thirty
three seconds of silence! While this may seem like it
would be pleasant to listen to, compared with most of the sonic
garbage of his offspring, who could consider it to be music, much
less by a Composer? A more
careful look into the title reveals something interesting: there are
four hundred and thirty three active ingredients in the drug
marijuana. (the phrase 420, used by many pot heads, was based on a
study of the drug before the Harrison Drug Act of 1916, in
which only four hundred twenty active ingredients were found. Later,
13 more were discovered). Cage was also an avid mushroom collector,
coincidentally psychedelic mushrooms are another popular escape for
drug users! Ironically, Cage's life can be used as a potent object
lesson for the escapist noise fan, he died of a drug overdose, and
his life, turned out, to be a Cage.

Yes, it's quite insane isn't it.
I'm sure that it's a phony site,
but one could just imagine!
There *are* "serious" sites
that have problems with
environmental "noise" as you know...

Now where on earth did she get the 'death by drug overdose' story from?

I reckon being listed on M.A.N. is probably a good sign that something is
worth hearing - certainly their list of prime offenders so far is a pretty
impressive list. :)

Indirectly, this site seems to have been able to link Cage to suicide
bombing! Read the following, from the 'Stories from Parents':

'Which touches on my main problem with noise music, it is this idea of
'anything goes.' When anything goes what is there left to do? If you can do
anything you want than why do anything at all or why not do everything? If
it's alright to attach a bunch of fireworks to your body and set them off in
your backyard during the dryest part of summer then why isn't it alright to
attach a bunch of bombs to your body and set them off in the mall?'

Re: M. A. N.

It is a hoax site. It was part of a viral marketing campaign for a
compilation CD of noise bands.

Now it's a litmus test of how slowly links get forwarded to listservs.
(silence would appear to be approximately 5 weeks behind the Coil
list, e.g.)

Re: M. A. N.

hmmmm---

If John Cage died of a drug overdose,
I'm afraid the drug in question was
called "life." He's not the only one
to o.d. on it either. Rumor has it,
even the writer of that bio-note may
in time expire due to surfeit of living.
Time alone will tell.

Ahhh...

Well, it's always good to know that a virus takes about 5 weeks to
take hold.

Thanks Jim - kinda thought it might be (by some of it's descriptions),
but it's still pretty humourous, (if a bit boring in style).

it must be a hoax, if they were true fundamentalists they would
certainly have pointed out to the fact that he was gay as well...all

new from New Delhi: the camera-toss

Friends,

a blogger & digital photographer who lives in the area
of New Delhi, a young woman by name of Shilpa Bhatnagar,
has today posted a few images from a chance operation
(maybe-possibly of her own invention, don't yet know)
called camera toss. So far, she's merely posted 4 images,
promising to post an explanation by way of follow up.
This had prelude (in Comment section of her just-prior
post) in the past day or two, in form of an inquiry from
a woman purporting (I'd think truthfully) to be a reporter
from CNN-in-India, saying she'd heard about Shilpa's
camera toss technique and wanted to explore / interview.

Being instantly (of course) put in mind of this in context
of Cagean chance operation modes of art-making, I presumed
to drop the cage name & a link in Shilpa's said Comment box.
I've no idea if she's even heard of John Cage, let alone
taken some manner of inspiration from him. The said-to-be-
CNN inquiry somewhat suggests possibility Shilpa may be one
of a number of camera-tossers (perhaps an Indian new art trend).

So much for my reading of the tea leaves.

Here's the relevant blog item:
http://shimmeringmercury.blogspot.com/2006/02/camera-toss.html

along with the mentioned, antecedent Comment window:
http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=11822023&postID=113802827100250154&i
sPopup=true

(the relevant postings here don't appear till the 8th one down,
from Sangeetha Sharma + Shilpa's reply to that; -- the earlier
discussion involves comment on the related blog text + pix item:
http://shimmeringmercury.blogspot.com/2006/01/cat-and-weird-animal.html
-- written ostensibly not by Shilpa, but rather by her cat (such that
several of the Comments are addressed to the Cat; the human is
referred to by the Cat Protagonist as "Slave" -- but I digress
rather considerably).

You heard it here (perhaps) first --

ciao,
d.i.
