FOR ROBETO RE: RYOANJI OUTLINES

hi roberto,
is it possible to compare music to score? could these dots and dashes have
anything to do with the use of i-ching? i'm by no means a scholar but
interested.

is this a very active and interactive forum. too bad there wasn't a site and
forum such as bagatellen. i like the way it looks and it's really easy to post
-- you can see the threads all at once!

best,
merry

Re: Ryoanji outlines

As I recall, all of the Ryoanji pieces are for
solo instrument along with three pre-recorded
tapes of the solo instrument as well as a
percussion obbligato. (Certainly that is the way
that the double bass Ryoanji works.) The
different types of lines, then, refer to the real
time musical line and each of the three
pre-recorded ones.

After determining how long the performer wants
each system of music to last, he/she pre-records
the dotted line, the dashed line, and so on,
treating these as musical contours whose limits
correspond to ranges that Cage created through
chance operations.

I hope this helps.

Best,
Rob

Re: Ryoanji outlines

Hi!

Rob's correct about the different lines. You can read about it, in Cage's own words, in "Musicage" (John Cage in conversation with Joan Retallack) p.242f. You'll also find other interesting details about "Ryoanji" there.
Anyway, if you want to know more about Cage's thinking and some of his great late works (One8, Two6, Four3), you MUST read this book. Really wonderful lecture.

Best
Lothar

graphic scores

hello silencers,

i have one thing here.

at the current time i'm organizing an ensemble of 5 persons
which will be devoted to performances of graphic scores
from variuos composers.

all participants of the ensemble come from different backgrounds and
will use broad spectre of instruments for performing the scores:
creative dj'ing, laptops, lo-fi analogue equipment, amplified
instruments and things...

i wanted to ask maybe here, in this list, there are composers who
have written graphic scores without any fixated pitch notation and
would like to give us a chance to rehears it and maybe perform it.

if you would like to submit a score please email me at-
arturas <at> bumstein.com

or reply here in silence list.

best regards,

Re: John Cage Biography

David Nicholls's biography of Cage for the
University of Illinois Press is due out in 2006.
The only other is David Revill's _Roaring
Silence_; Richard Kostelanetz wrote a rather
scathing review of it for MLA Notes (mostly for
not citing sources and for a few factual
errors)--there's a lot of biography in the
Cambridge Companion to John Cage (ed. by
Nicholls), the Cage collection published by
Routledge and edited by David Patterson, and
Pritchett's Music of John Cage. The Cage
articles in Grove 7 and MGG are both fine. I
would avoid Paul Griffiths's book.
