OT: Joni's Shadows & Light

Just watched Joni M's DVD "Shadows and Light" (via Netflix) which I do
recommend to all you Joni fans.

The band is TDF!!: Pastorius, Metheny, Michael Brecker, Don Alias, Lyle
Mays. I cannot think of a band supporting a singer with more technical
"chops" than this one. Fortunate Joni.

Tho Pastorius' solo is so jumbled that he may have begun his tragic
melt-down. [Yes, he has. I just checked. He begins to fall apart in around
1976.]

Recorded in 1979, everyone is looking young and great. Esp Joni, she's
wearing a teal suit, red carnation, purple shirt, black waist band, and
even "red high heels." Go Joni!! She moves her derriere in the teal pumps
in a excellent ladylike manner.... (Does that cute over-bite make it look
like she's smiling more than she is...?)

A good collection of songs, esp. for me two from the Hissing of those
Lawns: "Edith and the Kingpin" and the sublime "Shadows and Light."

-- enjoy the spring,

Bruce

Re: Joni's Shadows & Light

I actually saw Joni in concert during this tour (Providence, late
summer '79) and to this day what I remember most is being transported,
almost spiritually, by the song "Shadows and Light" as it was done in
person. And I remember hearing it on the record, some time afterwards
(I didn't own "Hissing" at that point, sorry to say!), and almost
feeling like it was a different song, or that maybe I had somehow
inflated it in my memory into something it wasn't. Probably would be
nice to do as Bruce suggests and watch the DVD. Thanks for the
suggestion!

Re: Joni's Shadows & Light

I recently came across an "album advance" copy of Joni's 2002 "Travelogue". Gorgeous, simply gorgeous.
It's an orchestral concert, but in the liner notes, the producer makes sure you know that it's not a
'greatest hits with orchestra' album, but rather a cross-section of her songs recorded with a lush
beautiful orchestra behind her. Moving and sad and thrilling and amazing all at once. One of my best purchases!

RE: Joni's Shadows and Light-another one to recommend

Another recommendation for Joni fans on this list is a wonderful documentary
called "Joni Mitchell- Woman of Heart and Mind."

http://www.amazon.com/Joni-Mitchell-Woman-Heart-Story/dp/B000096FTI/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-1820736-0548633?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1180027220&sr=8-1

There are great interviews and some really amazing concert footage that I
hadn't seen anywhere else. One of my favorite parts of this is Graham Nash's
description of meeting and falling in love with her.

Don't miss the extras and special features. Highly recommended!
